Ok.....so I guess no one has tried floating the barrel on their 98.
how about shooting with the hand guard off,it seems this would improve accuracy?

What I'm trying to achieve is maximum accuracy for the least cost, and without any modification that would hurt the resale value.
I have read that wood touching the barrel can warp due to moisture and or heat causing pressure that can effect accuracy.
I am wondering if anyone had done any expermenting on this with their k98.

Nope, never fiddled with any of mine. I shoot them as is as this is the way they were built. If I want to go for maximum accuracy I'd do the following. To stay original in appearance I'd cryo treat the barreled action. If I didn't care about having a historically correct looking Mauser I'd probably get one of those funky Scout Rifle stocks. They are free floated and they have an integral scope rail. Using this will not damage the barreled receiver and then I'd save the original stock and document what serial number it went to.

what Schuetzenman said
also
the cryo treat is on the expensive side.
hogging out the stock on a k98k will bring its value way down.
with your goal in mind i would :
make sure the stock is not cracked and all parts fit tight = no rattles, tight screws.
make sure the muzzle is not damaged in any way and barrel is as clean as possible.
try different ammo, or better yet reload if you have the gear.
practice a lot. reloading will bring your groups way down if the gun is good.
please don't BUBBA your gun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
