I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me. I saw a Galil sporter in .223 (used of course) for $1000. Is this a fair price or should it be lower?
Also, is it possible to put US parts in it to replace the ugly thumbhole stock? Who makes them and for how much?
Thanks for any help!

Mikey:
$1000 is probably a fair price for the .223 Galil sporter. You can replace the Galil internals with US made AK parts, but I think you would need a US gas piston to avoid the mag follower/floorplate requirement. Check with Mike Prewitt on this. I do know on the .308 Galil when you put the US parts in you have to grind the front part of the hammer off (where the bulge is) to clear the magazine. I haven't worked with the .223 yet so don't know if that would be required or not. You can get Galil Buttstocks from What a Country, but I don't know about the handguards.

Yes the price is fair. Yes Mike Prewitt can do the change for you. He has several parts availiable to make the change but if not GUNPARTS also and SARCO have GALIL Parts. You can convert over but as DAVEL111 said you must makr the changes.

I don't like thumbholes, but I wouldn't swap the original internal parts for U.S. parts, not on a Galil. I would keep the legendary reliability intact and live with the thumbhole ( it's better than most thumbholes out there, anyway).Just my $.02.

Gunparts and Sarco aren't stocked with all the Galil parts you would need. They are VERY limited on their parts. I have been helping Mike with trying to get more Galil parts, but nothing earth shattering yet. The bitch Feinstein and Klinton have put a crimp in the Galil pipeline as you probably know.

Spiwak, the best source for a post ban Galil is from the group that Mike Prewitt acquired. I don't know if any more are available. I got my .308 from him already and am waiting on the 5.56. There were 120 imported total by Mossberg before Feinstein shut the deal down. Mike got ahold on 30 or so I think. The .308's were complete except for a few parts. The 5.56's were pretty much barreled receivers I understand. Those are the ones Mike is trying to get parts for. I don't know if any are not spoken for yet. Mike's puter has been down. The price on the Galil's was around $1300.
talked to Mike a couple nights ago, he said he is still missing some small parts for the Galil .223. To the amount of US parts needed you can buy the Galil M-16 mag adapter and use USGI mags, That will count for 3 of your US parts. The other 3 parts you can use US trigger parts.

Thats a good idea D&TS. Except I've already bought some .223 Galil mags.
