State tour offers free gun locks

In an effort to help make homes with firearms safer and prevent needless deaths, Arkansas Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller will begin a statewide tour with Project HomeSafe to hand out gun locks.

The tour, a co-operative effort of the Lt. Governor's Office, the Arkansas Sheriff's Office and the Arkansas State Police, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Central Mall and continue in a number of towns across the state through Feb. 28.

This isn't the first time Project HomeSafe has provided gun locks. However, it is the first time the mobile education unit has been used. Last year, nearly 400,000 gun locks were given away at the entrance gate of the Arkansas State Fair.

"We're looking to get to those cities that weren't able to make it to the state fair last year," Rockefeller said.

Some of these places include El Dorado, Little Rock, Fayetteville, Pine Bluff, Russellville, West Memphis and Fort Smith.

People attending will receive a gun-locking device and the accompanying educational material. The safety kits are provided by grants from the Department of Justice and the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

Rockefeller said the national gun industry has supported this project financially in order to assure gun owners that they can remain safe in their homes with firearms. The National Rifle Association is also a strong supporter of the Project HomeSafe initiative.

"This is a no-nonsense, no-legislation solution to the problems of accidental discharges in the home," Rockefeller said. "At this time, there are over 23,000 firearm-related laws on the books and advocates are only looking for the passage of new laws. What we're doing here is giving responsible firearm owners a low-cost option to securing their weapon in the home and preventing unauthorized use."

This tour will be the only one made by Project HomeSafe this year. Rockefeller said some community forums and other events will be conducted later in the year.
