I believe this information is appropriate to have its own thread.
I wish I had known about this site earlier.
Hope you find it useful

Dare I say it? I'd really prefer to have mine rebarreled in 7.62nato......Anybody have any idea what that would cost with the adjustable gas system too???
Didn't see a website in the article for the work....

Yes a rebarrel job with all the original stuff put on the new barrel should set you back $350 to $450 at most gunsmiths. IMO.
Unless you have a lathe to do it yourself you wouldn't want to go there. Then a chamber reamer is $125 for the cheaper ones, $250 for the top end ones.

I called Bill Toth, who JB Hohlfeld--the author of the article, says does the mods. He was real easy to talk to and tho' my only concern was to replace the gas valve, I got the impression he was a straight up fella. I asked him if he had the valves for sale and he recommended I try to find the part first at one of the parts places like Numrich, cause that would be the least expensive way to go.
Here's his #:

Thanks Clearblue but Scheutz put the no dice on it....I'll be damned if I'm going to pay more to rebarrel and get the valve than the rifle cost in the first place!!!!
I'll just grin and bear the higher ammo cost.....
