Well it seems like he is honest about the upgrades and the totals of same. He's trying to get his money out of them not make a profit. As a first Garand it should be very nice. If you have the $$'s I think you should get it. Hell a Winchester receiver alone sometimes sells for $600 in some places.
Garands are gaaaaareat! Everybody needs one!

I think it's OK. Any time you upgrade anything you should do it strictly for yourself because someone down the road may not like those upgrades or want to pay for them. The rifle should have been quite serviceable as it was received. Looks like the owner simply wanted to make it a little better. Nothing wrong with that at all. If you can get some pictures and like the looks and feel comfortable with the deal then I'd go for it. Ask how it shoots and with what ammo?

Why not get one yourself through the CMP? It will be cheaper, and if it needs work done you will know it is done right. However, the odds are that it will be perfectly fine right out of the box.
Are you looking for a competitive rifle, or just a good shooter. Unless you are looking for something competitive, a regular USGI M1 will usually shoot better than the average FAL or AK.

Does it have a Century receiver, or is it an actual military Garand?

Anything being offered today, outside the CMP is most likely a new U.S. receiver on an military parts kit. I've seen quite a few post from folks with the Century receiver rifles that haven't had any problems though some folks have. I saw one at a show a while back and the stock was painted black and the finish was was nowhere near as nice as my Danish CMP Garand and it's not perfect by any means. I think the Century rifles really depend on the quality of the parts kit that was used more than anything. The receiver issues may have been worked out by now. Just my .02

A service grade or Dane M1 Garand from CMP is the best way to go. I've received 6 Garands from the CMP over the years and have never been disappointed. Personally, I prefer the standard service grades over the Danes, but eithe ris a good deal.
