TRENTON -- Groups advocating stricter state gun control rallied on the State House steps yesterday to urge lawmakers to pass so-called smart gun legislation.

"Friends, we are gathered here together on Valentine's Day, the day when we celebrate love, to say that we so love our children that we urge, we ask, we demand, we request, we beg that our legislators finally do what's right for our kids and pass the childproof handgun bill," said Bryan Miller, Ceasefire New Jersey executive director, to a crowd of about two dozen.

Bills have been introduced in the Legislature that would restrict state firearm sales to guns that can be fired exclusively by their owners. This would take effect within three years after the state attorney general determines a reliable model is on the market.

The bill indicates various technologies could be used, including fingerprint recognition, touch memory or activation by a radio transmitter worn by the owner. The bill exempts handguns sold for use by police officers.
