Florida Leads Nation In Murder-Suicides
According to a recent study, Florida leads the nation in a rather morbid category – murder-suicide.
Donna Cohen, a psychologist and professor at the University of South Florida, says a murder-suicide happens once every six days in the so-called Sunshine State.
South Florida holds the further distinction of being home to quite a few of those deaths. In 2001, 25 of Florida's 66 suicides occurred in Broward, Palm Beach or Miami-Dade counties.
There were four South Florida murder-suicides in January, keeping pace with last year's numbers.
Experts attribute the high rates to a large aging population and what they characterize as Florida's loose gun control laws. Also, not all states keep statistics on murder suicides.
