I'm ready to purchase a Garand from the CMP but can't decide between the Service Grade or the Dane. I want a nice rifle that I can shoot for fun and for an occasional CMP Garand match. You guy's input is always appreciated!

Thanks

I went and bought the service grade...a bit more, but I figured heck may as well get one that was used by our army, instead of the danish one. if your going to use it in the CMP matches....you may have to have it worked on, I'm not familiar on how the matches are conducted, but I'll bet those folks put a lot of money in getting their garands ready for competition.

I am wondering the same thing, since you are limited to two danes a year it seems the numbers of them are low and this might be a dwindeling opportunity to get one....................

Get the Danish. 1st thing is these were rifles our forces used but the Gov. turned over to the Danes at the end of the war. Second reason to get a Dane is it's $100 bucks cheaper. 3rd reason to Go Danish, most of them have new VAR Danish barrels on them so they still have plenty of barrel life. A standard Service Grade could have a throat errosion of almost 5 in some cases, meaning the barrel is extensively worn. Only down side on the danes is sometimes they have beechwood stocks. But those are replaceable.

1. I would go Danish for all of Schultz's reasons as well. Hell if your gonna shoot it get one that has life left to it.:D

I love my Dane and IIRC you can buy a an extra one or two each year if you are shooting in competition.

I just received a danish last wednesday. Springfield receiver dates to June 1944. I has a lot of European parts on it, but the var barrel makes the deal. Muzzle test is 3/16th from casing and the rifleing appears very strong, although I spent a long time cleaning the barrel out.

I shot it yesterday and it was one click to the right and the groups were excellent.

Wood and gas tube are horrid looking, but it's a shooter.

I wish I had the disposable income to purchase as many Garands as the CMP let's a man buy. I'd be up over 2 dozen right about now. Hell . . . I might have even changed my name to Garandman!;)

Thanks for all the input guy's! You've convinced me to go with the Dane. With it I should be assured of a decent barrel and mechanicals and if the wood is bad I will replace it with a Boyds stock set. Thanks again.

I had to debate the same thing when I purchased from the CMP. I went ahead and decided on the service grade and have been real pleased with the two I have. Can't slam the Danes, but I wanted USGI parts so I'd have a basis to build/rebuild on. I ended up with two Springfields, here is the end result . . . .
