I cannot get the handguard off my m48...further more I can't get the piece that has the bayonet lug and holds the retaining spring in place off either...anyone know the trick to this?

I never take them off for this very reason. I've heard a c clamp works well, but make sure you pad it so you dont mar the metal.
Sometimes you have to pry or tap the metal piece up as well while putting pressure on the spring.

Here's a link with instructions, for a Turk but it's the same procedure for a Yugo. Scroll down and you'll see the section you need.

Yeah my fingers were tired so I cut corners! :D
I prefer to use a c-clamp and a nylon punch. Use the c-clamp to compress the spring that holds the bayo lung on and use the punch to knock it off. Works great. They are a bitch to get loose.
