Last week maybe, someone asked what the BATF meant stamped on a Turk Mauser on a post somewhere.
Well, I asked my Turkish co-worker about it and he couldn't come to any conclusions for what it meant. He tried to think of some different varitions of words for a while and came up with nothing.
Maybe this question was already answered, but thought I would add this anyway.

I think Schuetzenman said it had something to do with Ankara (the arsenal) and Turkey. (Not the "B.A.T.F." that we all are thinking of...)

Okay I asked my Turkish co-worker (Berk) again with the clue Ankara which is the capitol.
Here is what he came up with
B Bati (West) He said that one is a guess
A Ankara (City)
T Ufek (Rifle or firearm)
F Fabrikasi (Factory)
The B could be anything he's not sure, we went on the net and found a few things, but nothing that would tell him what the B meant.
His Dad is here for a visit maybe I could sweet talk him into asking him.

I was the guy with the "batf" stamp on the stock. I will try to post a picture if I can get a clear enough shot. I am almost finished refinishing my furniture with the final coat of Tung oil.
B
T
A F
This his how it is configured with the lower part of the "T" extending down between the "A" and the "F"
