1. Just got my Gustofs M96, why is there a threaded barrel?

I believe it was for screwing on the blank adaptor.
I have screwed caps on my Swedes to protect the threads.
See:

PVC Muzzle cap/thread protector - 1.25

The previous poster was correct. The threads are for a blank adaptor (which have wooden heads) the adaptor shreds the wood (at close range they can be lethal). You can get a threaded cap to protect the threads. They also make a flash hider now that will accept those threads. Although, I don't think you could load a round with enough powder to give you a muzzle flash from a barrel as long as an m96 :)
There is a place http://www.samcoglobal.com/ and http://www.collectiblemilitaria.com/ These guys have quite a selection of Swedish mauser goodies. You can outfit an m96 quite nicely. Hope this helps.
