need some help on my first garand purchase. i have always wanted one and i think with taxes comin back this will be what i get.

i know i can get one from the cmp but there really arent any gun clubs close by to join that are part of the cmp and getting the training couse for the other qualification seems tough tooo

so unless one of you guys wanna sell me one of your Danes :) ill have to look elsewhere.

i have found one guy with a dane for sale but he wont go any lower than $500 which doesnt seem to bad.

i found this at a pretty local dealer so id like you thoughts and overall comments on what Garand to get and what to look out for.

SPRINGFIELD , 3,537,XXX Price $575

NICE SPRINGFIELD M1..LOOKS LIKE AN ARSENAL REFINISH, (DARK FINISH.) NOT A REWELD!!FRONT HANDGUARD HAS BEEN REPAIRED, REAR HAS A SMALL CRACK. THIS IS PROBABLY AN IMPORTED GUN AS BBL IS MARKED 2-67 "NP 30-06 2-49 18 TON". BBL IS ALSO MARKED ATHENS, GA. RECEIVER S/N INDICATES MARCH,1945 PRODUCTION. BORE IS BRIGHT AND MEASURES A TIGHT "3" WITH A BREECH GAGE. (THROAT EROSION) GUN FUNCTIONS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL.

thanks for all your help

I'm not a Garand afficiando, but the price sounds pretty good to me considering the Century builds are in the $350 range and the ones I've seen look like crap.

Well from CMP a Dane is $420 delivered a Service Grade US rifle is $520.

You don't have to joing a club locally you can belong to just a State Rifle and Pistol Association for example. That's what I do here in NC I join the NCRPA it's $15 bucks a year.

Have you gone to the CMP site and checked for CMP affiliated clubs and organizatins in Oregon? They have a list of such for each state.

Shooting a Garand Clinich isn't tough at all. You'd find it interesting and you'd learn (probably) correct shooting postions for Service Rifle and High Power matches. Breath control and sight picture lessons are usually inclueded as well. Most everybody I've met could use these lessons.

All that said the prices you list for both weapons are ok, not a gouge but not as cheap as you could get a CMP weapon even factoring in membership fees and the cost of a Garand Clinic.

how do i find out where local training sessions are and what would qualify me for the training part?

the closest range that is cmp affiliated is about 2 hours away, do you think they would offer the training course?

thanks

im gonna see if that guy will go down to $500 on the springfield.

You can join the Garand Collector's Association to satisfy your club affiliation. Go to: http://www.garandcollector.org/

If you're ex-military, that will satisfy the competition requirement.

As far as the two guns you've found for sale, if they're in good shape, IMO they're worth the price.

The Barrel might be british proofed...should be BNP , the b probably to lighty stamped. I used to have one, barrel, receiver and bolt BNP marked with barrel marked similar to what u have above. Is this proof near the muzzle? If you pull and lock the bolt back you should see more proof marks on the right side above the op rod. Should give u make i.e. SAA , P date and lot number.
Overall not a bad price. Better if you the bore is good and if u have 45 dated springfield barrel

Well I assume you went to the www.odcmp.com site and found the club two hours away. I'd check with them first. They should have a contact name and address and possibly a phone number that you can contact to find out if they have Garand Clinics or at least a High Power or Service Rifle match. BTW are you a veteran or current active military. That would prequalify you for a purchase. All these details are on the CMP web site.

You only have to shoot one 50 round match which comes with the Garand Clinic after they explain the shooting positions and the number of rounds to fire. The one I went to in 97 didn't explain anything about a Garand BTW, just the shooting positions and how many rounds you shoot in each leg of a rifle match from each position.

Also there is no minimum qualifying score. You could hit the paper once and you're going to have your "Proof of Active Competiton" requirement satisfied. BTW it's good for 5 years after you do one, so you can purchase rifles each year, ammo each year and spare rifle parts each year for 5 years after one Garand Clinic or High Power Match.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program is the way to go. It's a lot of fun and it's not as difficult to qualify as it may seem.

A throat errosion of 3 is pretty good, I don't pass until they are 4's. A price of $500 is good because that's $20 cheaper than the CMP Service Grade Garands. They use to include the postage in the price but now they tack on the extra $20 for Fed-X delievery to your house.

Does the club furnish Garnads to shoot the match you ask, answer I don't know. Some do and some don't. You don't need a Garand to shoot the Clinic with. You could use a carbine or a Swedish Mauser or a Springfield or a Lee Enfield. Even a AR-15 or Mini-14 for that matter. What you need is the ability to reload quickly with either stripper clips, enblock clips or a magazine change.

There will be 4 phases to the match; offhand, sitting rapid fire, prone rapid fire and prone slow fire. The offhand and prone slow fire phases of the shoot is a load it one round at a time thing. The rapid fire strings of sitting and prone are where you'll need to be able to sripper load 5 rounds or shove in a mag with more rounds in it. When you shoot with a Garand you have a modified enblock that holds 2 rounds and then at the reload you shove in a standard 8 round clip loaded with 8. For a Swedish Mauser or any other bolt gun that can be stripper loaded you start with 5 and then do a quick reload with a stripper clip full of 5 that you shove in at the reload point. If you use an AR-15 or other mag fed weapon you can put in one round and then run 9 in the other mag. This gets the reload over earlier in the string so you can concentrate better for the remaining shots.

When you call the club ask them if hey have Garands to shoot with.
