Well because I had seen a slight tad of rust on my 1911 I decided to remove the backstrap.Sliding it out a sear spring fell out.I thought ok no problem this will be easy to reassemble so I cleaned the frame and parts. When it came time to get this Spring back into the frame I had a hell of a time figuring out how it goes back in.I got it in but now the grip safety dont work, and the hammer wont cock half the time.Someone please help me!Is there a step by step scematic on the web somewhere on how to reassemble 1911's?

Thanks Neil,

I should have know not to mess with it.I can strip or take apart and assemble most anything else but this was the first time Ive gone this far with a 1911.

I think I can walk you through getting the spring back in correctly.

The spring has a tab on the uncut end. That tab engages a slot on the inside of the frame where the mainspring housing slide up. The slot is about 1/2' inch above the bottom of the frame (the back wall of the mag well). So knowing that you can see how the three springs should be oriented.

The are three springs formed by two cuts. The longest is the sear spring and will be on the LEFT side of the gun. The middle (both in length and position) is the disconnector spring. The shortest is the grip safety spring and should be on the Right side.

Keep in mind that the hammer strut must not get in between the spring and the frame as you reassemble (in fact it prabably wont go back together - wish I had my gun in-hand). So pivot the strut out of the way as you lay the spring in place.

Get the spring in place and hold it down firmly as you get the mainsprin housing started in its groove. Keep pressure on the spring as you slide the mainspring housing upward (if the spring slips out of the groove you can still install the mainspring and the spring will likely get a little mangled - in fact I bet thats what happened - all of the springs are up higher in the gun than they should be).

I'll stop there because it sounds like you have all the rest down pat. If not, post again.

I would go ahead and disassemble the gun now, because if my suspicion is correct you don't want to ruin the spring by having it under stress and out of position. You may want to buy a new one.

Good luck
