I occasionally have an ejection problem with my M1 carbine (For the record, it's an Inland receiver and a Saginaw barrel). What happens is the old casing is removed from the chamber, but does not get ejected. Instead, as the bolt moves forward from its rear-most position, the old casing gets caught between the bolt and the front of the receiver above the chamber. Of course, the bolt has picked up the next cartridge in the magazine, so the old casing gets pretty messed up.
I don't think it's a magazine problem. It has happened with both of my 30rd. and one of my 15rd (I have 2 15rd.). But I don't see how the magazine could affect ejection.
The ejector plunger functions smoothly, and the ejector spring feels pretty strong.
My guess is a worn extractor. I think what is happening is that the pressure from the rearward moving bolt--in addition to the pressure placed on the rear of the casing by the ejector, is causing the extractor to slip out of the groove of the casing before the casing clears the chamber, therefore the ejector plunger is out of contact by the time the casing is clear, without the fulcrum of the extractor to throw the spent casing out of the way.
I think that by replacing the extractor and extractor spring will fix the problem.
This is a hypothesis, and wanted to see if anybody else has had this problem and agrees/disagrees with my diagnosis. Thanks.
