well I ordered a MAS 36/51 from wholesale guns and ammo and this is what I got. I needed a good fixer upper and I got it.the blue is about 70% and the wood needs some real work.the bore look like in good shape but I will not know until I get to work tomorrow.here is some before pics.
there is one plus to the wood there looks like to be no cracks to it. ill see tomorrow when I get it all apart.

1. that would be very Challanging for anybody else but you. After what I saw you do to that Rom SKS, I cant wait to see the end results.

2. Dont forget the Patented Whos2Know tool to take that front barrel ring off:D

That thing looks rough, good luck.

Question: what, if anything, can be done with rust in a barrel? My Yugo SKS has some nastification going on and I don't know how to clean it up. It would be quite a gem if not for the rust inside. Suggestions?

put 0000 steel wool on a brush and scrub, scrub, scrub that would be the best thing or even if it's not that bad just shoot it out.

A little mild detergent and boiling water will do wonders getting the black off that wood...

Before I'd use steel wool in a barrel, I'd try some pieces of a Chore Boy (copper alloy?) scrubber pad and WD40. Worked wonders in a Win. 1885 Low Wall I have. I don't like WD40 for anything other than rust removal on firearms though. I swab the hell out of a bore with Sweets 7.62 or Hoppes afterwards.

These are starting to grow on me, but I'm not sure I'd want one in the condition you've got because I'm lazy and wouldn't want to mess with restoring it.

On a side note, does anyone else think the bbl on this looks like a piece of French erotica?

Rough as a cob but I'll bet ya it cleans up into something sweet. Get some Puple Power on that bad boy. Ole Barney will sweeten that wood up in a heart beat. If the wood has any major cracks they'll be under the grenade launcher at the end of the forearm. That's about the thinnest area on the wood. Is the bolt matching? I doubt that it has but any rework stampings? Man I'm crying for a project at the moment. Keep us updated step by step would ya? I'd like to put that in the French Forum in it's different stages of resurrection. :D

Oh man that's FUNNY! Cracked me up. Thanks.

I just took delivery of another MAS36 today. This one was VG from Century for $89. They only had 8 of them and my rep called me the day they showed on her system, they all sold out quick.

Anyway, if you keep your eyes open they turn up from time to time in VG-excellent condition. The one I got today was a VG+ to EX-A few dings in the wood was it, all matching numbers including floorplate. Real nice Park on it, Nice red wood. Mirror bore.

The only 36/51's around right now are the ones from WGA like above. Mine wasn't nearly that grody but the forarm was split, right where RS mentioned.

Century has MAS36, good with cracked stock $49.

None of the big dealers has anything else as far as MAS36 or MAS36/51 goes. Someone like Empire arms may have one.

Yeah sure, you'll be on that baby night and day till it's done.:D
Seriously, I think it would be quite a teaser to see what you get done each week with a pic and details of the upcoming step. Anticipation will be high on my end. I love these rifles. Kind of weird but built like a brick shithouse. Overlooked by the mainstream until recently, IMHO.

I am reminded of this quote from Ghostbusters:

"Ray, for a moment, pretend that I don't know anything about metallurgy, engineering or physics and just tell me what the hell is going on."

For someone who is not much of an amateur gunsmith and not up to the challenge of restoring one of these -- can you get one in better shape somewhere (besides the auctions)?

EDIT -- just read REDSTAR's post above.

No, you sicko. It was a line from Seinfeld: "The Jerk Store called and they're all out of you."

I picked up mine at a local gunshow for $130, unissued since rearsenal. Don't see them often though. The only place I've seen that had them was Jersey City Armory which had them "Unissued" for just under $100. They seem to have gone out of business though as their website www.jcarmory.com is defunct. www.empirearms.com or Alan's Armory, I don't know the website, may have some. These are as hard to come by as a MAS49 which I'm looking for. Auction/for sale sites may be the only avenue available at the moment. I'll look around at some of my other haunts and see if anyones got a nice one they're looking to part with if you want me to?

I'm always interested in window shopping, but I have plenty of new toys to keep me busy for a while. I was just curious for future reference. Thanks.

(But if the price was right...)

stripped her down today.boy I have a job ahead of me.the bore looks to be ok. it has 2 or 3 pits in the land of the grove( flat part of the rifling). the stock has a little split in the front of the top hand guard about 1/4". the insides look to be in Grate shape I would grade it VG. I got some steel wool and took most of the off surface rust of her. the bolt does not mach the gun and the date on the barrel if 1953. there is no refinish stamps that I can find.only stamp I found is a circle inside a circle.I'm going to have to reblue her because of the right side of the receiver is pitted. I took some wet and dry sand paper and took care of that.
well other then degreasing her and degrease the wood and getting the surface rust off that was all I did to her.spent almost 5 hours on her and got paid overtime to do it:D
that was my Saturday
