I have a M1 garand with serial number 2682851. It is a spring field. Barrel SA 6 44. I looked up the serial number and it was made in feb 1944. Would it be common for the barrel to be 4 months newer? Could the receiver and barrel come like this together from the factory? Thanks Mike

Yes. I remember reading somewhere that some parts lagged from time to time. Perhaps they made a change in something or simply got ahead of themselves. I guess they could even have grabbed a pallet of receivers form the front of the rack instead of the back. Whatever the case I think this is very possible. I'll try and find the article.

It was not uncommon in warbuilt M1 rifles to have a few months difference in manufactureing dates. In the mass production of parts, barrel production may speed ahead and stock on hand would build until receiver production caught up, or even vise-versa.
Secondly, I've read when receivers had minor manufactering defects or flaws they would stack them up until such time as they could repair them. In these instances, barrel dates would lag receiver dates by a significant amount and still be original.

Ok Guys ,
here is a quote from J.C. Harrison a guru in Garand collecting . From Collecting the Garand
"First in - Last out:
In the manufacturing process of the M1 Garand, parts were routinely stored in bins at,or close to the work stations where assembly was accomplished. As parts were used, these bins were refilled as required, either by a single worker keeping all bins full or by each worker making trips to a centralized parts pool.Usually, the first parts placed into the bin were the last part taken out. If the bins were refilled without being allowed to go empty, the older parts remained at the bottom. In any period wherea particular part became scarce, the older parts would be used as the bins emptied. This results in periods of undeterminable length where an earlier type or part number could have been used. the rule -of-thumb on this type of anomaly is this,if the part is of an earlier type and wear patterns match, leave it alone. It's probably correct. Also parts such as barrels can very within 3 to 6 months of serial number of the weapon."
There You have one persons opinion to add to the others . :bigdeal:

IMO it's original to the receiver.

I have been on the site for less than one year but some subscribers continue to beat a dead horse. They ask questions that have been discussed over and over again without conducting a search. Who says you can't you bruise a dead horse?

William Jefferson Clinton proved that there are many ways to answer a question.............and even though I have seen answers to a questions on the board in different areas, I enjoy seeing other people answering the same question.
It doesn't take too long to realize who knows what is correct and who doesn't. And then I know who I want to direct a comment or question to and who not to ask .
Does that Make sense to You guy's ?
That's one reason I enjoy You guys on this page the most, You people have the knowledge unlike some other websights, that have people that just like to hear themselves type or to pontificate on something that they don't know about .
And Schutz, I am still working on changing my pictures to jpg so I can post them!
Bring on the Horses and show me Your Knowledge :p UNK
