Group is anti-gun

Louisiana citizens, the Louisiana State Police, Gov. Mike Foster and all members of the Legislature need to be well aware that the organization calling itself Americans for Gun Safety is the new anti-gun rights organization in disguise. Its central goal is to rid America of privately owned firearms. This is the old Sara Brady gun-control organization that was called Handgun Control Inc.

Billionaire Andrew McKelvey is the bankrolling founder, and backer of this newest anti-gun organization. McKelvey was a board member of Handgun Control Inc. and underwrote the enormous costs whereby Handgun Control Inc. and its Legal Action Project sued gun makers designed to bankrupt that industry.

Heading McKelvey's anti-gun group is none other than Jonathan Cowan, ex-chief of staff for the old Clinton administration's Housing and Urban Development secretary, Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo was the guy in the Clinton administration who tried to sue firearm makers and the entire firearms distribution chain into oblivion.

The Town Talk's front-page article headlined, "Group says Louisiana falls short on gun checks," yelled alert. Such lies and whitewash are the typical of strategy of anti-gun organizations - a Hitler-like propaganda telling enough distorted, warped, slanted and outright lies often enough, from organizations that sound patriotic and official that the ordinary person will believe what is said.

I cannot stress strongly enough to Louisiana citizens and our elected officials that Americans for Gun Safety is the devil in disguise. It is intent on abolishing the right to privately own a gun. No study, no press release, no data or information coming from this organization should be believed at all.

The term gun control has been changed by the anti-gun movement to camouflage its real intent. Consequently, American citizens, elected officials, law enforcement officials and agencies, gun owners, hunters, collectors and plain believers in constitutional freedoms must be extremely careful in believing who says what and what organization is spouting words. The very term used by this newest anti-gun group calling itself Americans for Gun Safety is a charade. This organization is after elimination of one of our greatest freedoms - the right to own a gun.

No gun show loophole

There is no gun show loophole. A prohibited person remains barred from possessing a firearm, and licensed dealers still must do background checks even at gun shows. Recently, the American Medical Association did an exhaustive study and found, much to its chagrin, that the Brady checks have had no effect on reducing gun violence, which was on the decline before Brady was enacted. And, according to the U. S. Bureau of Justice Statistics only seven-tenths of one percent of criminals get their guns at gun shows.

As for the Americans for Gun Safety, its founder and chief source of revenue is monster.com billionaire Andrew McKelvey, late of the board of Handgun Control Inc., now hiding behind a new name, the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence, which he quit because of their ineffectiveness. His aim was and remains the confiscation of all privately owned handguns and many types of long guns as well.

We have 20,000-plus gun laws and always the claim that just one more so-called sensible law will make everything right. We didn't curtail the criminal misuse of automobiles, also known as driving while intoxicated, by licensing drinkers or registering six packs but by vigorous enforcement of the laws against drunk driving.

If you want to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, enact Project Exile. An illegal gun gets a violator five years in a federal penitentiary a thousand miles from home. It's worked where tried.
