View Full Version : 98k Russian-captured from Empire Arms
Yay, the BBT arrived today with my 98k. I took the photos in a hurry so the lighting isn't great. The wood is solid with some cosmoline remaining and a few small nicks and chunks missing which have been well worn down by handling. Metal finish appears to be very good but I haven't cleaned it up yet and there's a lot of dark tacky stuff on it. There is no evidence of any peening of markings. The Russians electro-penciled everything they could and even got the number wrong on one part. Original parts are not all matching numbers. The barrel shows some very minor pitting and surprisingly sharp rifling. Import stamp is from Coles. This gun should clean up well and be an excellent shooter.
I still can't get into the photo album so follow this link for the pics.

So where's the German markings that everyone wants? I expected to see a coat-of-arms, seal or SS marking etc...

The Germans did not use a Coatt of Arms. They used a code across the top of the recv. with a date. Example: BYF42
This allowed them to hide the identity of the manufacturer.
BYF=Mauser
CYQ= Spree Werkes
AC= Walther
ect.
You will see the proof marks on all parts and the stock. Eagle over number.
I too, not knowing much about Mausers, expected some kind of crest. You can't tell from the pic but mine is stamped S/42G. There are very small eagles in a couple places along the side of the receiver.
