Okay guys bought an M1 Carbine scope mount which uses the dovetail the rear sight is in....Anybody ever remove their rear sight??? I realize it just needs to be "hammered" out,but don't know how to go about this without marring up the finish or the wood.....
What should I use?Rubber mallet? Will it come out just holding the rifle or should I put it in a vise???
Thanks in advance.

ok, lemme see now,
Loosen the front band, remove the action from the stock and put it in a (padded) vise, using a brass drift, gently drive the rear sight from right to left.
the rear sight is usually staked in to the rear sight dovetail, so you gotta use a bit of force here..
after you get her out check to see hoe well your new mount fits in the dovetail.
If it's tight ,use a file and reduce the size of the dovetail on the mount... NOT the reciever(modify the LEAST expensive part Remember?)
if it's loose , then you have to LIGHTLY peen the dovetail on the Rec. don't do too much at once or you'll have a too tight fit and it'll be a pain in the a$$.however if you do over do the peening use the method described above.
If you have any Q's LMK and I'll try to scan a TM for ya.

HTH,
Dan

It's a new manufacture, IAI
I plan to keep it though sorry....

Kewl, an IAI. :)
please keep us informed how well you like or Don't like it..
I had a bunch of G.I. carbines that I sold years ago.....
Damn, I wish I still had 'em.
they were about $150.00 ea. back then; I'd buy an IAI if it's as good as the orig. G.I. models
(not to mention a little cheaper;) )

I have an IAI. But the rear sight it screwed up. I have another one(stamped peep). But I am wanting one like the original to that rifle(milled peep).

Which is why I asked 1 Pat.

I like mine alot. Shot great until I loaned it out the got it back with the sight damaged.
