Man, did I pick up a beauty of a Carcano today! It is a 1941 Beretta Cavalry Carbine with a friggin Sniper accuracy mark on the barrel shank:D . I pushed the usual slug of cosmoline out of the bore, wiped it out good and proceeded with solvent and about 20 patches. When finished, I stared down and saw the most perfect bore I have ever seen on not only any Carcano I have owned, but on any military rifle I have ever owned! Mirror shiny and the rifling lands look like they were just cut. The bore looks like a brand new commercial rifle! Also, the metal finish looks like a commercial gun, there are no nicks, cracks, or initial carvings in the stock anywhere, and the wood is really nice with alot of streak highlights in it. The bluing is worn pretty well, and the stock does not match, but it is a Ux stock, just the same.
It came in the same lot from SOG from which my M38 Fucile Corto (Cavalry Carbine) I ordered two weeks ago had. I saw it with the other 5-6 Carcanos my FFL dealer ordered, but it was so caked in cosmo, I didn't notice the accuracy mark below the year stamp. Since it was really the nicest of the lot, I went back today and bought it for the $140 which he was asking. I noticed the Sniper accuracy mark while cleaning the cosmo off the barrel.
So far, this one is the pinnacle of my Carcani collection. If any of you guys can talk your local dealers into buying a lot of 5 or 6 Carcani through SOG (yeah, you pay more), then you can hand select the best of the lot.
There's some real gems in this latest Century batch, you just have to look hard.
