Police guidance on Firearms Law

By Wesley Stanton

21/03/2002

This month, for the first time, proper Home Office guidance notes have been published for dissemination among Police Firearms Licensing departments and other interested parties – up until now, each Chief Constable could apply his or her individual interpretation of the Firearms Acts within their area, which led to some big policy differences between regions.

Firearms Law – Guidance to the Police 2002 should put an end to these differences. It has been jointly produced by the Home Office, the Police and the shooting organisations.

The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) has been enthusiastic about the publication’s introduction – the document means that constabularies will now be consistent in how they apply the law, which makes life for everyone far simpler – be they shooters or administrators.

There’s no such thing as the perfect publication – little gremlins creep in during the print process and undo the editors’ hard work. And occasionally, their big fat older brothers and sisters creep in to wreak their arcane art. On page 148 of the new guidance notes, under contact details for the Gun Trade Association Limited, we were surprised to note that the website and contact details are listed as http://www.gun-control-network.org and their contact email as contact@gun-control-network.org.

How could the two organisations be confused? Well, their online presences do have something in common – a blissful ignorance of what makes a half-decent website – but even so, it’s hard to forgive the Home Office for this particularly crass error. Mind you, the Gun Control Network will have probably been wondering where all the website traffic has come from – that’s if one of the few has bothered to look through the site logs.

The Home Office is now well aware of this error – and for the record, the Gun Trade Association’s proper web address is http://www.guntradeassociation.co.uk and the contact email is enquiries@guntradeassociation.com.

The Home Office is, of course, is hastily producing addenda to go out with future copies of the new guidelines.
