The Chinese have already fielded the 5.8mm cartridge for their Type 95 (?) rifle; not sure about the cartridge length though.

I dont know that much about it. This is all just mixing and maching a bunch of numbers that Ive found on the web.
An AK with a 6mm barrel could use pretty gosh dern high balistic coeffitient match and hunting bullets from many manufacturers and launch them at higher than normal speeds. AND use the same old mags.
Im sure custom rebarreling and wildcating are difficult and expensive things.
I'll probly never do it.

One thing that might not be so expensive is just fitting a barrel that has the standard thurty cal (.308) bore instead of the .311 of the AK. Then, you could load up all the MatchKings, Ballistic Tips and SSTs that you wanted...

Be seeing you.

One bad thing- the neck of the 7.62x39 is short. This blows for reloading necked down ammo into the same magazine, as it reduces the already tiny powder capacity. The 123gr .311 is waaaayyy shorter than the high BC 6mm and 6.5 bullets, especially the nice big BTHP's that rule at long range. The .223 is a much better base for 6mm, though even it has a relatively short neck.
