This may be a FAQ question, sorry if it is, I'm just too lazy to search right now...

Are the ".308" Enfields conversions from .303s? Opinions of them?

Not exactly. The RFI (Rifle Factory Ishapore) arsenal began production of the SMLE around 1909. It continued to manufacture SMLE pattern rifles until 1970. The No.1 Mk.III* rifle was manufactured at RFI from 1936 to 1963 - those are chambered in .303 British. When the Brits dropped the .303 cartridge and went to .308 (7.62N) after WWII, RFI began production of the rechambered No1 Mk.III* (in 1963). The 7.62N versions were designated "Ishapore 7.62mm 2A" and the slightly modified "2A1." RFI made these rifles until 1970.

Opinions? I like 'em (yeah, big surprise). My Navy Arms reconditioned 2A1 is accurate but hefty. Seems to be heavier than my .303 Enfields. The mag accepts 12 rounds of 7.62N on standard FAL or M14 strippers. Gotta love that! :D

Zouave,
I just checked J&G's website and they have the #7 carbines in .308, but I don't believe that they are C&R.
Thanks,
