View Full Version : Questions for you...
enfield people.
How good is an Ishapore 2A .308 Enfield? Comes with 2 mags and a sling. One mag is numbered to rifle.
What do they usually go for?
I don't know much about Enfields and don't own one yet. Personally the ones I've seen were ugly but it they're good rifles I may have to get it.
Thanks for any info.

I don't have a 2A, but they are fairly well made Enfields. NC_REBEL and Scheutzenman each own one and they speak highly of them.
Click on this link to learn more about them:

Some 2A Enfields are C&R and some are not but I am not sure on what the differance is...:(
Supply of these rifles has all but dried up. J&G Sales had both C&R and Non C&R versions of the 2A listed for sale on their website but aren't listed anymore. (The C&R version was much more money)
Navy arms is sold out of the 2A right now, but it is still listed on the webpage.

Newly manufactured for the Indian Army by the Ishapore Arsenal during the 1960s, the "Rifle, Cal. 7.62 2A India" is one of the most unusual and collectible Enfields currently available. Based on the time proven No. 1 MKIII S.M.L.E.design, these rifles were constructed of modern high grade steel and chambered for the 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester) cartridge. Thanks zouave good info.
Looks like I may have to get it.
Now how to tell if it's C&R?? I'd hate to get it and not log it if needed.

ED4, I have one of these. Mine is a 1968. They are heavy and kind of ugly, but mine is quite accurate and the looks grow on you after you shoot it. They are usually painted in balck laquer paint and have a gloss varnish finish. They have a 12 round mag. You may have to bend the lips out or in a bit to get it to feed, maybe not.
Per the list, If they were built before 1965 they are C&R. The C&R list says the date, 1964 or earlier I think. However, I ordered the 1968 one I have from SOG as C&R.
The list is close to useless these days especially for newer stuff. I think that anytime someone gets a private letter ruling on a weapon it puts that class of weapon into C&R status (usually, unless it's a one of a kind or something) so I guess it's hard to keep it up to date.
Anyway, I recomend one of these Enfields. I recomend all the different models actually. They are reliable smooth actioned accurate rifles.

PS- I paid $89 plus $10 shipping for mine from SOG. The rifle is in good condition, mirror bore. Alot of the enamel paint was chipped and the stock was dingged up pretty good, came with one mag numbers matched for the most part. Maybe the bolt doesn't. It shoots great though, I love it.

ED4, you are about to embark on a wonderful journey... Okay, so maybe that's a bit overly dramatic. The straight scoop on Ishapores is this: they are solid, reliable, powerful, bolt action MBR's. IMHO, the only reason these are not issued to troops now is because of the dominance of automatic/select fire rifles on today's battlefields. Let's see, 7.62N caliber, 12 round mag, lightning fast bolt and proven design... what's not to like?
RED is right. The C&R's are made in 1963 or '64. Later production (1965-70) is not C&R eligble. Mine is not.

Thanks for the info guys.
As for what's not to like I can think of many things and not including looks I'd say being a bolt action. But no big deal. I shoot my Mausers, Nagants, Destroyer, and 03-A3. Back to being a bolt action speed of it does not matter to me as I will be slow with it. I am right handed and have a dominant left eye so I shoot long guns left handed which makes operating a right handed bolt rather slow.
Redstar the one I am getting has 2 mags one is numbered to the rifle the other is not.
Anyone know where to get a bayonet for it now?

I hope Navy gets some more in. It made me sick to my stomach when I called and they were out of stock.

Ed4,
I am a lefty, and the Enfield is the only bolt that I can fire rapidly :D
The action is so fast that a flick of the thumb will send that bolt flying!

That means that it requires a bit more force to close the bolt. To open it, just barely nudge the bolt handle and it'll fly back in the blink of an eye. That, in part, is what makes the action so smooth and quick.
A bayonet for the Ishy? International Military Antiques sells original Indian bayonets. Sometimes you see them in Sportsman's Guide too.
Thanks for the info I'll try it out when it gets here.
I know they cock on close. So do the Destroyer carbines and some other Mausers.
