So would you crufflers stone me if I had a ODCMP Danish rack grade M1 rebarreled as a .308??? ;)
Any comments on the general quality/shootability of the various CMP M1 grades would be appreciated.

Most of them shoot between 2 (the better ones not so common) and 4 inches, the more typical results. Rebarreling in .308 . . . I can see why you want to after all 06 surplus ammo is not that available but we are swimming in 7.62 Nato. I say go for it!

Heck No !!!:D

Have that Baby rebarreled. It will save a lot of money shooting 7.62 x 51 surplus !

Make sure that whoever rebarrels it knows that the gasport has to be enlarged slightly to work with the 7.62 Nato.

I've never owned a CMP M1 , but from what I hear , you'll be satisfied:)

If you're looking for a Good M1 smith try Dean at this link : www.dgrguns.com:)

I haven't actually ordered the Garand yet. Why doesn't CMP mention the use of an FFL in the shipment of your rifle? Does their NICS check free us of the need for an FFL to broker the shipment?
I ought to just get the C&R FFL....

The CMP ships directly to the qualified purchaser. They don't accept any kind of FFL. You must first qualify to purchase. As far as the conversion I say go for it. I have a very nice Dane already and have considered getting a rack grade for the same reason. There is a company in Tennessee, I'll try to find the link that will do it. IIRC you send them your barreled action and they will rebarrel with a Hart match barrel in 7.62x51 and return the original barrel as well. Something like $190-200 bucks.

A Hart barrel for $200 bones! When did Hart get so cheap. Brownells charges about $279 for an airguaged Douglas Garand barrel. It'll be ready to go but short chambered. The proper gas port hole if I'm not mistaken is already drilled in the barrel. The 7.62 Nato puts out less pressure than the M2 Ball ammo so it needs a bigger port.

Oh and there needs to be a spacer in the magazine well to keep the bullets from shifting forward too much under recoil. I think you can get this in the Brownells cataloge as well. They have actions wrenches, barrel wrenches for the Garand. They also have pull through chamber reamers. Supposed to work by closing the bolt on it and then you crank on the long "T" handle coming out of the muzzle until the bolt snaps into battery, thus giving perfect headspace.

Might be cheaper to send it to somebody. All these tools will cost you over $300 more than likely.

Yeesh, maybe I'll just leave it in '06. I can bum the dies off of my brother in law, and the loading supplies are all the same anyway. So, educate me on these "VAR" barrels that are on the Danes- What's the deal with those????? Worth the money?

They are a Danish replacement barrel as I'm sure you know. They are reported to be very good quality. Mine is a 1966 issue barrel and leaves 3/8" of bullet showing when I put a round in the muzzle to check for wear. They're a good deal in my book. I haven't fired mine for group yet but I believe once I get her sighted in, it will be pretty good.
