View Full Version : Loose stock
I recently bought a MAK-90 (postban) and have noticed that after each time I have taken it out to shoot the screw on the bottom of the buttstock comes loose. After firing today, I was inspecting my weapon and noticed a small crack on the top of the buttstock behind the receiver that wasn't there before. Has anyone had the same problem? Also has anyone tried the black composite (plastic) pistol grip, buttstock, forearm combo on their MAK or AK? If so how do you like it?
To fix the problem with the stock just apply some lock tight to the screw unless you are refferring to the wood stock and the screw you might have to replace it. The fiberforce stocks are ok. I dont care for how they look so I would go with a US parts kit and put a pre-ban style stock on it.
Fiberforce stocks suck. The Choate draganov style is the only way to go. There no telling how many stocks have been sold just by letting people shoot my guns at the range. Four of my post ban guns have Choate stocks. Everyone who has held one of my guns coments on how good the stock feels. Usual coment is "this feels good , the stock on mine feels like a 2x4". Best of all their $40 and legal on any post ban.
Where do you get the draganov gun stock?
www.choatemachinetool.com/ there $49.95 but if you check gun shows and shotgun news you can find better price. Gun dealer/friend ordered several stocks and accesories. I drove to Bald Knob,AR and picked up his order, it is only 50 miles from my house.Saved friend about $20 in shipping so got mine at cost+ tax.
I bought the Dragunov style stock....very nice!! Lightweight, feels better, you can get into the gun and not feel like your holding a 2x4, plus it looks real good. Thanks all for the advice. I definately would recommend this stock for anyone interested in changing stocks on their MAK or AK.
Or, if you're like me, go for the pistol grip stock set. It eliminates the pesky thumb-hole stock altogether and in my opinion allows for better control. You can still find pistol grip stock sets (Chinese wood stock sets) for about 80 bucks. Unfortunately, I recently found out that modifying the MAK to a pistol grip set might be illegal.
No if ands or buts it is illegal unless less than 10 imported parts are used. The USA kits sold have US mfg parts to replace imported parts to get it under the 10 parts rule.
Ok, let me make sure I got this straight, I've heard about the 10 part rule, and I wonder if it applies here:
The only parts I've modified are:
1. I've removed the thumbhole stock and replaced it with the pistol grip, which also means I've replaced the stock (2 parts total)
2. In the pack I recieved, I also got the upper and lower handguard, but see no need in installing them when I already have the wooden upper and lower.
3. The pack did NOT come with a long enough grip screw, which I later purchased at a gunshow.
So, in essence, I have only installed 3 parts that were imported from China, even though I recieved 4 parts in tha pack. Is this legal?
TKK, yes it is illegal to put pre ban stock's on a post ban gun. I think it is total bullshit though. They say you can put american pre ban style stock's on your gun, but not the same type of stock that's made in another country, go figure. It doesn't make a damn bit of sense to me either. It's a way for greedy poeple to make a chunk of money from people like us. Do you under stand, it would be alot easier to purchase those 40.00 stock set's from other countries but instead we must pay 175.00 plus s&h to do the same thing, like i said it's a bunch of bull shit.
I totally agree, Zero, that's why for now I thumb my nose at them...I have my pistol grip stock set installed and until they pry it from my dead hands, that's probably the way I'll leave it. Funny thing is, certain authorities don't give a rat's ass either. I recently had a State Trooper admire my AK at the range for it's "post ban" style with "pre-ban" furniture. (Of course, this all being before I was made aware it was illegal) Apparently it made no difference to him what furniture I had on it, as long as I didn't shoot up a school yard with it. Which brings me to my next point, why are AK's illegal in the sense that they are associated with murder when the past few "atrocities" committed by kids were performed using American Arms? Conspiracy!
TKK you missed it. Your rifle as it was imported has more than ten parts. You have to have LESS than 10 imported parts in the whole rifle. Try www.atf.treas.gov/
Also go to www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/wbardwel/public/nfalist/law.html look for atf.letter.24
Thanx, I was a bit confused on the whole thing to begin with....so as it stands, I have to have an imported rifle with less than 10 imported parts? Oh yeah, thats REAL smooth...jeez, like having a Ferrari with an American engine...Thanx for the info, it's good to know some one out there has the answers. No matter how disappointing...
