I have recently come upon a Norinco MAK-90 with a milled receiver (386 is stamped in oval on left side of receiver). Does anyone have any experience with this make of weapon? Recommendations anyone?

Got three chinese milled receiver rifles(2-mak-90, 1- mak-91) they are the best chinese ak. they have the best trigger pull.Nice and smooth crisp let off. Mak-91 has national match stamped on receiver.
I have 2 friends with mak-90's and both have great trigger pulls as do mine. They have shot over 5000 rounds thru each rifle with no problems.I have shot about 1500 thru one of my rifles with no problems.
recommendation= shoot the crap out of it and enjoy.

Do the milled Norinco's use heavy or light barrels?
Are they threaded?
Is it a polytech if it is marked with an oval 386?
How is fit and finish on these rifles?

All Chinese AK rifles have a barrel that is larger in diameter than European AK's. All measurements were taken with calipers and the barrels were measured 1/2 way between the front sight and gas block.
The stamped receiver MAK-90 in 7.62 and .223 have barrels that are .608" in diameter.
The milled receiver MAK-90 has a .615" diameter barrel.
The milled receiver MAK-91 has a .684" diameter barrel and the NHM-91 has a .668 diameter barrel.
The Maddi post bans have .580" diameter barrels and Romanian's are .584".
All AK's have barrels that are 4 differnt diameters. The chamber is the largest diameter then steps down at the rear sight block, then the gas block, and the smallest diameter is at the front sight.
All Poly Tech's have oval 386 stamped on the receiver. The barrels of milled receiver MAK-90 and 91 rifles are not threaded .
The fit and finish of Poly Tech rifles jpre or post ban are the best of all Chinese rifles imported. The trigger pull is the best of any AK imported into the US,yes even the "holy grail" of AK's the Bulgarian SLR-95's. Just spray paint a milled MAK-90 black like the Bulgarians and you will have the best finished AK imported with the best trigger pull.

My PolyTech Legend AK47s was made at factory 386...and I have a milled Norinco MAK 90 that bears the same 386. Go figure. The rifles have similar finishes but the PolyTech looks a bit nicer. Maybe it just seems that way because I know that the Legend is preban.
They're both keepers.

JA; you say that all polytecs have a oval with 386 in it. Is that for just milled AKs
I have a poly tec and it doesn't have that anywhere. it does have a 416 in a triangle, and you have to look real close to even realize that they are numbers.

All the milled receiver Chinese rifles have 386 in a oval. The post ban models MAK-90,MAK-91,AK Hunter and Poly Tech Legend pre bans have the 386 in a oval.

JA:

My milled MAK 90 has a tack welded nut at the barrel. I can actually see 2 threads at the end. Also, the rear of the receiver is angled cut with circular opening. Is all milled MAK 90's like this or did I just get unlucky?

JA,
You say you have both the Mak 90 & Mak 91 with milled receivers. Do you have a favorite ? I have a chance to get a NIB Mak 91 with milled receiver for under 500.00 is this a good price, should I get 2 or look for a Mak 90 to round things out. I was looking at getting a Legand, but the mak 91 is a national match receiver and barrel, so figure the Mak 91 is like a post ban Legend, and alot cheaper. I was and or looking at buying some milled Bulgarian recivers to stick away, and have a rifle built off one of these, but by the time you buy the parts and have someone assemble it, seems like the Mak's would be cheaper. I have recently come into some extra cash and would like to invest some on AK's before the good ones are all gone. JA what do you and others think. Thank You all.

Gen-X, the rear of my milled MAK90 is the same angled cut, round hole configuration as yours. Looks as though it may have been going to be an underfolder but didn't make it until after the 89 ban went into effect.

Unlucky...not really. You have a solid, well built rifle that will more than likely outlast you. Enjoy!

All Chinese MAK-90 rifles that were in the first bunch imported/in customs right after the 1989 ban had threaded barrels. All after this bunch had the threads turned off the barrel. My NHM-91 and MAK-91 have barrels heavier and longer than MAK-90's. They shoot tighter groups but I don't know if this is because of better/heavy barrels or longer sight radius of the 20" barrels.
All the milled receiver post ban rifles have the slant cut with round hole in the rear of the receiver. I subscribe to the were going to be underfolding stock receivers but instead of the holes milled in the side one was cut in the rear theory. As my MAK-90 and MAK-91 fit the stock like a glove that came on my NHM-90 with the solid slanted rear of the receiver and cut outs for the underfolding stock on the side of the receiver.
Favorite? Yes MAK-91 with 100rd drum shooting prone with the bipod.
!!!!$500 sounds good for nib MAK-91-get all you can get as they are not makeing anymore.!!!!
Measured some of my AK rifles barrels with calipers between the gas block and front sight -
MAK-90 milled=615"
MAK-91 milled=.684" (heavist)
MAK-90 stamped=.608"
NHM-90 stamped=.601"
NHM-91 stamped=.668"
MAK-90 stamped .223=.608"
Maadi ARM,RPM,and RML=.580"

I was thinking of buying one. The barrel has a nut tig welded covering the threads am i to assume the barrels threads were left intact? any help would be appreciated. Also thinking of purchasing a gas tube block with bayo lug is it difficult to install it?

If Chinese rifle has a barrel nut on it then the barrel is threaded. The rub with changing the gas block is that it and the front sight are pressed on and pinned. You will have to knock the two pins out of the front sight then press it off with a 20 ton press. Then do the same for the gas block. Press on your new gas block pin it and do the same for the front sight. Unless you have a press it looks like a job for Mike the moderator of the"build it yourself" forum.

I agree, JA, the MAK-91 barrels aren't very well suited to being taken apart by the average do-it yourselfer. I own a MAK-91, and it is my favorite AK to date. I have never had anything bad to say about it.
