View Full Version : NHM-90
Can any one tell me the difference between a NHM-90 and a MAK-90? Ihave a NHM-90 and have not seen anything on the norinco board about them, thanks for any info Red
MAK-90 had threads turned off the end of barrel and chinese stock with rubber recoil pad. NHM-90 had a long (looks like a piece of pipe)muzzle nut the barrel is threaded and American made stock.
If your stock has black plastic butt plate the name of the maker is on it.
Thanks for the info JA,iv'e had the rifle for a few years and didn't know much about it Red

JA if the NHM has US stock is it POST BAN, is it any good? Any info appreciated where it was made, who imported them, what calibers? THANX
The only difference between pre and post ban guns is the stocks pistol grip/folding vs thumbhole and muzzle brake/flash supessors vs muzzle nut/ threads turned off end of barrel.
Any rifle that has a two diget number in the model disignation ie MAK-90,NMH-90,MAK-91,NHM-91,SA-93,SLR-95 etc. is post ban. Any rifle that has a two diget prefix on the serial number is post ban ie 90-xxxxx,91-,92-,93-,94-,95-,96-.
Chinese guns (NHM-90,NHM-91)were sold with Boyd of S.D. and Bishop of MO. stocks that were made in the USA. These stocks had a longer pistol grip area better sized for large American hands. The Bishop stocks were made of Hackberry wood.
There were several importers and two makers Norinco and Poly Tech. The parts were made in hundreds of collective factories and assembled in several factories. You know those peasents have to have something to do after a hard day of collective farming.Chinese AK-47 type rifles were only imported in two calibers 7.62x39mm and 5.56x45mm(.223 Remington).

JA "YOU DA MAN", I wish I knew this
stuff, I have seen guys buy guns
marked 156-1, and POLYTECHS with
folded bayo's thinking they were pre-bans to find welded muzzlenuts, or stripped threads with glued on nuts, ground off cleaning rod housings under sights or gas blocks its a jungle out there, whats a novice to do but ask experts like you.
Are there any books or newsletters to tell the real item from the"enhanced"
models???
I haven't seen any books just 10 years of owning AK's,going to every gun show, and keeping up with the laws. I have a friend that is into mil-surp guns he got a ffl and opened a shop. Hanging out with him at his shop and working gun shows with him. I have seen hunreds of AK's and SKS's pass through his shop. Hundreds more at the gun shows.

What does it say on the side of the Receiver? The pre bans will say 56-2,, or three, etc. Also the P.techs will say AK47, or AKS,, Some post bans Polys were caught in shippment, and say AKS and then in sml letters SP for sporter. These do have threaded muzzles, but the bayo lug was hacked off, and a thumbhole was affixed. These like the Mitchell arms M90 series were caught in the ban of 89. The NHM and MAK series are all def. 100% post ban, but u wouldn t know it seeing how creative some guys are at converting them...illegally mind u!!!!!!
All post bans have to have receiver marked with model number or serial number containing the date of mfg/import i.e. MAK-90, serial# 90-xxxxx,or 90(space)xxxxx.I have seen some NHM-91's that didn't have a prefix on the serial # just 93xxxxxx. There was no hyphen or space between first two digets
If your gun is a 56-1 and the receiver is not marked MAK or serial # doesn't have a two diget prefix it pre ban.
I have a 56-1 with receiver markings stamped over with lines and restamped MAK-90 sporter.
This rifle was in customs impound during the ban in 1989 and had to be restamped. Thumbhole stock put on and muzzle nut weilded on. Just the locking side of bayonet lug was ground down.

WELL JA, my buddy has an underfolder, stamped reciever, Threaded muzzle with slant comp, Norinco make marked
1 56-1, blond wood all #s match no 90 prefix, no weld but the bayo lug is crudely rounded where lugs should be. He bought it from a guy who boght it from a guy well you get the picture, he didnt get it at Walmart (its LEGALY papered), but now we wonder what the heck we are holding, a pre-ban or a paperweight? it dont say Mak or NH nothing # stamped on rcver cover, bolt, trunion block, bolt carrier, all match. HELP.
If there is no date stamped on receiver or in the serial# then it is pre ban. Look at the front sight base where the muzzle nut screws up to it for signs of tack weld. If you don't see any sign of welds pre ban.

Man you know your stuff. Heres one for you.
Ak-47 in 7.62. Has underfold metal stock with wood grips. Has threaded muzzle break, no welds or grinding. No bannet lug. On inside of receiver where the stock connects all looks factory with no mods. The stamping on the side is as follows:
56 inside a triangle
mso21611
csi laca ntla
nhm-90
Legal or not?
If it has NHM-90 it is post ban. If you look at the back of the receiver it is solid no openings. The telltale signs of a weld will be there where the tang was to screw the thumbhole stock on.

How do you guys think the NHM-90 stacks up against the Mak-90, or other AKs for that matter, in terms of workmanship, quality, accuracy and resale value?
I've go one -- like it a lot -- but I'm no expert.
The two rifles are the same except for stocks and threaded barrels or lack of. Personally I would prefer the NHM model just for the threaded barrel and more comfortable stock. As far a resale there is no difference between the two from the newspaper want ads and gun shows that I have seen.

I have an A.K. style rifle that I need some info on. It has a welded on muzzle brake w/ no holes, bayo lug has been cut off, detachable mag, light colored thumbhole stock
w/rubber buttpad, stamped receiver w/ a 1" cross indent to the rear to convert to a folding stock I was informed, it has a tang that attaches to top of butt stock and a screw from bottom to the receiver, following
on left side : NHM90
7.62x39MM
MADE IN CHINA
BY NORINCO
CSI ON CA
s/n:MS011682 w/ a triangle around #66
any info or background would be greatly appreciated. KAC945
p.s. want to put fiber stock on it, what style should I look at.

Imported in 1990 as there is no number prefix to the serial number. This is a folding stock AK that has a tang welded to the rear of the receiver to attach a thumbhole stock so it could be imported. The barrel is threaded.
The rivet can be cut and a under folding stock installed. The tang on the rear of the receiver will have to be removed. Of course it would be illegal to do this.
Choate makes 2 models of AK draganov stocks. The rear of the receiver is slanted so a little light trimming of a Choate stock will be required to make it fit the stamped receiver model stock. Get the milled receiver stock model.
Don't by a fiberforce stock unless your hand is the size of a 10 year olds. It has a really small pistol grip.

Thanks for info I'm sorta new to commy guns but they seem to shoot well and hold up to my abuse I bought an sks about 3yrs ago and actually dropped it in a mud hole accidently but I did not want to clean it right than so we took a hose and rinsed it off and made sure the bore was unobstructed than went out and fired approx. 250 rounds w/only 3 misfires, and I sort of blame the ammo after we were done I scrubbed and oiled it real good. It seems to work like a champ every time I shoot it.
