JA,
I have been reading this forum for a while and you seen to know your stuff. Can you (or anybody else help me out on this)? I have a MAK-90 that I am positive is a pre-1994 ban (I went with my friend to buy it some time in 91 or early 92). From what I understand the rifle had to be converted to SAW configuration before 1994 to have all the good features (pistol grip, etc). The gun was purchased with a thumbhole stock and with the flashhider threads removed and the bayonet lug removed. Could this rifle have had a pistol grip installed before the 1994 ban and be legal?

Markings on the rifle:
on bottom of rifle in front of mag well- Made in China by Norinco

on left side of receiver-C. A. I. ST. A. VT
Mak-90
Cal 7.62x39
386 in an oval
Ser # 112XX

on left side of receiver cover- Ser # 112XX

on right side of bolt carrier- Ser # 112XX

there is a # 3 on the front sight directly above the rifle bore

there is also " F28" stamped on the gas port housing and also a # 2 stamped in the place where the bayonet lug had been ground off.

the lower receiver is stamped and has the angle cut on the rear of the receiver.

Can you or anybody else tell me exactly what I have? Is it possible that it is also a pre 89 ban rifle?

Thanks for any assistance that can be provided in helping me decipher my rifle.

It has to be a pre 94 because imports for China were outlawed in 94. Pre 89 no way it is stamped MAK-90= imported in 1990. The 89 ban was no pistol grip, functioning bayonet lug, flash suppressor. If you put a pistol grip on before 94 it is still illegal.
The other stamping on the various parts are factory stamps. The guns were made of parts from over 150 factories. It was assemblied in factory #386. Unless you put a US parts kit on it no pistol grip.

Thanks for the info. I had heard somewhere (probably incorrectly) that the 89 ban made the weapons have to have the thumbhole stock, etc, for importation reasons but could be retro fitted by the new owner of the rifle to the original configuration. My understanding was that the reconfiguration had to take place before 9/94 to be legal. I wish all of this wasn't so confusing because I really enjoy the rifle. Wouldn't the rifle be considered to be post ban legal due to the rifle only having two of the "evil features" (pistol grip and detachable mag)? Thanks for the assistance as I wish to be legal but am so damn confused with all of the laws!

If you added a pistole grip w/o the US parts kit you would be converting your rifle to an illegal import. That's even if you did it prior to '94. Imports and domestics play by different rules.
