I have a pre-ban Norinco with all the goodies and was wondering if anyone knows about the quality of this series (56-S). I didn't see anything pertaining to that model# anywhere.

Dear Sir,
All of the Norinco Pre-1989-Ban weapons, chambered in 7.62 x 39 mm, are in the 56S family.
56S....Fixed wood stock set version.
56S-1..Metal under folding stock with wood stock set.
56S-2..Metal side folding stock with red bakelite (plastic) stock set.
56S-3..Fixed bakelite stock set version.
Please note, the Norinco Pre-1989-Ban weapons, in 5.56 mm (same caliber as an M-16/AR-15) are in the 84S family.(With the same model numbering as the 56S family.)
The only exception is the 'Bullpup' AK which is, if my memory is correct, is model 86S, chambered in 7.62 x 39 mm.
Lastly, most collectors like/value the PolyTech AK series over the Norinco. The PolyTech Legend series have milled receivers, i.e. the PolyTech Legend National Match. The 'standard' PolyTechs do have a stamped receiver, like the Norincos, however the PolyTechs appear to have a better overall fit and finish to them.
I hope all of the above text helps you out. My apologies for the lengthy dissertation.
