I bought a Norinco AKM-47S, and was told it was a pre-ban. How do I verify this? What does the "M" and the "S" designation mean? Finally, is there any information that can be taken from the serial number, such as date of manufacturer, etc.?

M=modern S=sporter/semi
If it is not stamped on the receiver MAK-90 or NHM-90 it is preban.

So if there is not a "mak90" or "nhm90" stamp it is a preban? I just bought what i was told was a nhm90, but it doesnt have a nhm90 stamp on it. It does have M006772...Made in China by Norinco...CSI/ONT/CA. Is it possible that I have a preban ak that was given a thumhole stoc for legal purposes after 89?

The law is if it was made after 1989 is has to have year of mfg/import on receiver if not it is preban.
