I would recommend a rifle from the No. 4 series :)
Although they are all similar, the No. 4's were the most advanced of the Enfields.
The Lee-Enfield No. 4 rifle was developed to provide a receiver-mounted aperture backsight similar to that of the Pattern 1914 (No. 3) rifle. The No. 4 rifle also reflects a new (British) standard in screw threads, making nearly all threaded components incompatable with those of the SMLE (No. 1) rifle. In addition, the No. 4 rifle incorporates a heavier barrel than that of the No. 1 rifle, stronger steel in the action body and bolt body, and a short “grip-less” bayonet that mounts directly to the barrel, rather than to a separate nosecap mounted on the fore-end.

I agree with Zou. It would be best to start with a full length rifle. The No.4 does have it's advantages. Eventually, you'll have them all. ;)

No. 4 Mk II = most desirable IMO
No. 4 Mk I = next most desirable
Why, . . . . better sights is the answer.

The No4mk1 is to be preferred. It's bolt raceway is more mechanically sound....No late-war shortcuts......

No.4 Mk1* with milled rear sight and dial IMHO. MK2's are also very nice but are postwar and usually cost more for a nice one.
My $.02 worth.
Happy Hunting!!

I'd say the No4 Mk2. Try to find an unissued one if you can. They are beautiful.

Trigger pull on the Mk II's should be better as it's attached to the reciever and not to the magwell.;)

I started with a No. 5. Should I go out and get a #4 as well? LOL

I like the No 1 Mk III's myself. Dark Walnut stocks, brass buttplate, buttery smooth bolt actions, interesting stripper clip guide bridge, and much more intersting Bayonets and attachments than the No 4, IMO. "Ugly as a bum", as the Brits would say, but a classic looking military rifle!
