View Full Version : What mags for pre-ban Poly Legend?

I've been reading the threads here and spoke with some people at Inter Ordnance and am still very confused about what I can and can't do with my NIB pre-ban Polytech Legend.
Can I legally use _any_ manufacture and/or dated hi-cap magazine, or am I restricted to only the 3 Poly mags that came with it? Can I use generic 5-round magazines for hunting?
I just bought a 75-round drum that is marked "Made in China by Poly" - is this legal to use without modifications?
Does my Poly (I haven't received it, yet) have a flash suppressor or a muzzle brake? Can I replace it, if I wanted to do so?
Thanks for all your help! I'm sure there'll be more questions after these <g>

I'm tired of this question. http://www.ak-47.net:81/akcgi/smile.gif
Use any mags or drums you want. The only time this becomes a concern is when someone has a rifle with a US parts kit on it. Since the magazine floor plates and followers are considered "parts" by the ATF, you have to be careful. If the US parts kit had just enough parts to make the gun legal with a pistol grip, you may go back over the line popping in an import magazine.
Any pre-ban or thumbhole AK can use any mags they want. People with the US parts kit guns have to be careful. My SSR-99 has enough parts that I can use any mags I want...same with my Maadi that will have the Soupbowl kit.
As for places you can't use hi-caps. Hawaii is one. Nothing over 10 rounds that can fit in a pistol. This includes AR-15 and AK mags since there are pistol variants of both. There are also some limitations in New Jersey as well.

I am not an expert on Chinese weapons so I will have to defer on telling you exactly what the legend's features are. I believe that you don't have a flash suppressor, rather a slant compensator.
If your gun is truly preban ('89). The world is your oyster. Do what you will as long as you don't go into any area's that will require NFA resistration. Your gun probably had a pistol grip and it took high capacity mags when the '89 ban was enacted. Hence, it qualified as a "assault rifle" as having two or more of the "bad" features. This means it is grandfathered and you can do pretty much as you please.
Do not rely on my post alone for confirmation. There are many more on this board that know the law better than I do. I learned what I know from months worth of viewing their posts.
Consider that altering this gun even though you can, will reduce its appeal to those of us that consider ourselves collectors. KEEP ALL PARTS IN GOOD SHAPE SO YOU CAN RETURN IT TO IT'S ORIGINAL CONDITION IF YOU EVER WANT TO SELL IT.

If it is indeed "pre-ban" you can do whatever you want with it, use whatever magazines, put on whatever muzzle attachment, whatever bayonet, and even a folding stock. But it must be "pre-ban".

Who ever said one couldn't use a high-cap mag in any weapon? As long as the high-capacity magazine was not made after the '94 Crime Bill took effect, are they not perfectly legal in any weapon which accepts them?
Some have said that "certain municipalities" prohibit use of high capicity mags, but they never list any that do. I wish I could rule out such statements out as sensationalist rumors, but there may be some truth to their statements.
Look at all the "high-cap" mags one can buy for glocks and other pistols. They are all legal in any pistol for anyone to use so long as the magazines aren't marked "LEO."
And as previously stated, if the Polytech in question is "pre-ban," then the world is your oyster and you are most certainly exempt from all the nonsense legislation that has passed.

You can use any type you want....and the polytech 30 rounders that will come packaged with your rifle are about the best mags available...buy some more than just the three that come with the rifle.

sometimes we must come full-circle to find the truth
Hello,
Your Legend should have come with a muzzle nut, not a slant brake. The bayo that came with your Legend is made for your Legend only. It will be made out of the same color wood that is on your Legend.
All and any 7.62 mags will work in your new gun, enjoy!
