I just was taking down and cleaning my new Savage-Made No 4 Mk I and I have ran into three problems:

1. Bolt will close but is EXTREAMLY hard to get back open
2. The barrel seems to wiggle in between the handguards
3. Upon screwing the long horizontal screw into the stock (below the recevier I think) I noticed that it looked like a small metal peice fit in the other side for it to screw into...except I cant find it...what goes here? Are replacements available?

Any help is appreciated!

Try PMing NC Rebel or Shuetzenman, I never completely disassembled a #4 but both of them have.

Here's a couple educated guesses

1) did you screw the bolt head all the way back on? It shouldnt close at all if it's not screwed on completely but theoretically it might.

2) I'd take it off and start over again.

3) Cant help you there.

The bolt head has to be screwed on completely and sliding in its track or else it won't close at all, so that can't be it. Is the trouble that you can't withdraw the bolt all the way back to the receiver bridge? Can you at least flip the bolt handle up without too much trouble?

1. Are you sure there is nothing in the action (like a really dirty cleaning patch) that might be wedged underneath the bolt?

2. Double check the safety switch. Make sure the safety is not engaging when you work the bolt. I've seen safeties that are so loose that they engage very easily.

3. Take a look at the mag. Check those tabs that hold the mag follower down and make sure that your bolt head isn't getting hung up on them.

2. The barrel seems to wiggle in between the handguardsThere is supposed to be some play there. Not a whole lot, but enough that you can see the barrel move a little.

Are replacements available? Not sure which screw you mean. Is this screw in the wrist (tie-plate)?

I have a blow-up of a disassembled Enfied. The stock is not taken off the receiver.

the screw in question is right in front of the "wrist" of the gun...I belive that it is possible the missing fixture in question may be more or less built in and I simply didnt notice it missing when I bought the gun
