So desperate are Japanese police force to prove that they are cracking down on guns that some of them have started faking handgun confiscations.
The Aichi Prefecture has suspended three officers from duty after catching them massaging the force’s arms-seizure record – and now the policemen may face prosecution.
The trio pretended that a gun seized in Osaka Prefecture had been discovered in Aichi Prefecture. Police said that the three - part of the force’s Firearms Control Division in its Safety Department - have admitted to the allegations.
The suspended policemen allegedly heard that a man linked to organised crime had deposited a handgun in a coin locker in Osaka. Instead of informing Osaka Prefecture, they obtained the key to the locker, took it back to Aichi, where they hid it near a shrine. One of them then called local police and pretended to be an informer. Osaka Prefecture discovered the deception.
