hello,

I recently bought a mauser 71/84 rifle, mint condition but when taking the bolt out of the rifle I noticed some surface rust on the striker and inside the bolt, I want to take it apart clean the rust away and then grease it, but I can't find someone who know how to take the striker and spring out of the bolt. As all the parts have matching numbers the last thing I want to do is break something... pls expain how to do it? also if anyone got some info about the mauser 71/84, historical, pics or whatever, pls send it to me or let me know where to find them..thank you so much!

First off, welcome to the forums. :jump:

How'd you manage to get a rifle in the UK? I don't have my Mauser book here but it may well disassemble as a conventional Mauser bolt. I'll look in my Mauser book tonight when I get home.

Here's a link to a posting on typical Mauser bolt disassembly written up by me a few months back. http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45988

thank you for your help!
The mauser 71/84 is quite prehistoric when it comes to bolt design so I'm not sure if the disassembly process is the same as the 98 models, let me know if you can find out in the mauser bible ( I wish I had one of them..)
It's quite easy to get mausers in UK, contrary to pistol shooting rifle shooting is not prohibited and many are shooting 98Ks, the Mauser 71/84 being obsolete and black powder can be purchased without licence as wall hanger..but to shoot it one need a licence just like a normal rifle...
it's time to clock off for the evening here, talk to you later!

Best regards,

fred

hello! I tried to use the recipe for the 98K to disassemble the bolt of the 1871/84 mauser but it is not the same design...let me know if you have an idea where I can find a disassembly manual or a site/forum about this type of old Mausers? thanks..I'm going to a gunshop on saturday to ask if they can help, they already told me on the phone that they could not do it themselves but probably had to send it away to a ''specialist'' ( gonna cost me I can feel it..) i'd rather do it myself than getting it back with pliers marks all over!
cheers,

fred

Welcome to our forums transmark! Great having people from all over the world checking us out :)

Here is a good web site on the 71/84, where I lifted these bolt removal instructions:

DISASSEMBLY: The 71/84 bolt is tricky to remove.
1) DO NOT REMOVE THE BOLT RETAINING SCREW!!! It is pinned to the bolt itself with a tiny cross-pin and will not back out completely without breaking it. It will back out sufficiently to allow the bolt retainer washer to slide over the receiver bridge. Back out the bolt sufficiently to allow the washer to clear ... and no more.
2) Open the bolt and pull it all the way to the rear.
3) With the right hand (I'm right-handed) hold a good amount of back tension on the bolt and with the right thumb or a finger of the right hand hold the bolt retainer washer up so that it can clear the receiver bridge.
4) While holding back pressure on the bolt, with the left hand move the magazine cut-off lever from the back position to the forward position. As the cut-off lever is moving, the bolt should softly snap back out of the receiver.
Re-installation is only a matter of re-introducing the bolt to the receiver. It will slide past the spring without any tricky manuvers being necessary.

In another paragraph on this web site they say the washer is screwed off to disassemble the bolt which is in two segments.

Not complete info but probably better off than you were before.

Here are results of a google search, there's several good sites here for history, pictures, etc, I checked several for disassembly but didn't find any other than the one above, however I didn't check but 4 or 5 of all these.

hello!

thank you for the info, Schuetzenman has found the instruction to disassemble the bolt on his Mauser Olson book..I asked him to paste it in this thread so that all can benefit from it ( I know a few others who got stuck trying to do it without the proper instructions..) it's nice to know that there is a place where anyone can find the expertise needed about those wonderful old rifles!

thanks again...

Good caution on item one the bolt retaining screw. I didn't read that detail in Olson and it may not even be in there. There is a photo of a disassembled bolt and all the parts numbered in the book with 1, 2, 3 etc. list of steps to disassemble the bolt. It does say in Olson to just loosen it, it does not say to remove it. The retainer pin is a logical thing to do. Can you imagine the sucker walking out under combat firing . . . oops!:o
