Since my gun is not 100% perfect I'm thinking of rebarreling it to a 30.06. Will the barrels FAC sells work? The ad says for large ring Mausers and come in either 22" or 24". I also want to scope it, but not drill and tap so I can go back to original if I want. The M48 stock will definately stay.

Well a barrel should be close but it's not like an AR-15 where you just put a barrel on the receiver and all is well. These types will need to probably have at the least a final headspace correction required. I hope the FAC barrels are short on headspace other wise a lathe may be needed to get the headspace right.

If that happens then it's going to cost far more than the weapon to barrel it.

Besides why would you want to take a rifle that is chambered in the cheapest centerfire caliber in the US right now? It's 8 mm and you can get cases of ammo for as little as 6.7 cents per round! 06 is going to run you 30 cents to a buck a round!

I just want something new to play with. The ass load of 8mm ammo I have already won't go to waste as I'll be getting another M48 in a week and my Turk will be here very soon. Since the one I have now isn't outstanding, I just want to play around with it and Bubba it up some. Just so long as I can put it back like I found it when I'm done playing.

The 8 mm and the 06 round will be the same on head and rim size so the bolt wouldn't need to be altered. Trying to find a military profiled 06 barrel is going to be the hard part. Most barrels are sporter profile and IMO won't work if you want to put the military rear sight base. Which is the best way to scope one without drilling and tapping. Use a scope base that replaces the rear sight and then use an intermediate eye releif scope to do a "Scout Rifle" look.
