ok, there is alot of talk about a little bit of fileing fixing the newKBI so that it will accept regular AK mags.
The gun is supplied with a 10 round mag. Extra mags cost between $35. and $39. To me thats very expensive when I can fnd 3 U.S.A. mags for the same price.
I'm willing to do it if its legal and reliable. Anyone know if it is lagal and reliable?

Well your first mistake is buying one that will only take hi-cap mags but you should be able to switch the receiver for a Hesse. It will take all mags. They run for about 90.00 and a gunsmith should switch it out for around 60.00, then you will be legal, could have saved yourself the trouble the first time and got an AK with a real receiver instead of the Politically correct bullshit.

*Techically* if you slap on a U.S. parts kit the rifle is no longer an "import" so the mod. to accept hi-caps would be legal. I believe that Federal Arms Inc. is doing that with the new MAADIs being imported. I'd check with the BATF first though to save your ass in the future. (BTW the stock that comes with the gun is already American made, so changing that part out wouldn't do you any good.)

Ok, well Bryant, this is my first AK, and both myself and my dealer were told that it would accept all mags. I wasn't aware of the "mistake" until I stumbled onto AK-47.net. I didn't even know at the time that there were other AKs still able to be purchased. I hope that holds true for Calif. cuz thats where I'm at. After combing this site, I do agree with you that this was a B.S. move by all involved. But you can bet that my next AK will be one of the Hi-caps.
Destroyer, Did you mean that the filing job may be legal?
And I will be looking into the Hesse reciever.
Thanx

The only reason these rifles were allowed to be imported is because they will no take a hi cap mag. If this modification were legal don't you think the importers would do it and make twice the money per rifle.

It *may* be legal to do the file thing. But like I said, check with those sneaky Feds first!
BTW, I wouldn't fool around trying to change out receivers. Attaching/removing the barrel on an AK is a beee-otch!

Hello,
More and more I realize just how lucky I am to own Pre-Bans.
I hope that one day the powers to be will reapeal the "Assault Weapons Ban" and we can return to the days of $200.00 semi AKS's.
Take care, OUT in Vegas

I'd look into B-West receivers or Krinkov. I've heard too much bad stuff about Hesse receivers to fool with those. Good luck on your switching it to take the good mags. Long Live High Capacity!!!!!!!

If you live in California, better buy a high cap assault weapon before 12/31/99, because they can't be bought, sold, traded, imported or even given away after that date under the new California Assault Weapon ban. For those outside of California, the good news is that the federal Assault Weapon and hi-cap magazine ban does in fact expire on 9/13/04. Someone on one of these boards mentioned this "sunset clause" in the law, so I looked it up. Sure enough, the relevant portions of 18 USC 921, 922 and 923 are all repealed by their own terms on Sept. 13, 2004, ten years after they were passed into law. Unless Congress and the then sitting President enact a new law on these issues, it will legal again to manufacture and sell Assault Weapons and magazines in the US after that date, assuming your state law doesn't prohibit it, like California's.

That's about the best news anyone could hear in a long while huh? Maybe we'll have a President who values our second amendment rights like he should and it'll go back to they way it was before the ban..

Would`nt that be great if that happened and they could`nt get enough votes to bring it back. But kowning our luck something or someone will put back in the limelite again.
