Here's my latest addition to my bound book. I got this privately from someone on Gunbroker after his auction didn't sell.

I've been told he got it originally from SOG. She's in very good condition with most of her blueing and the bore is clean with sharp rifling and no pitting. The only none matching serial number is the barrel.

I'm going to give her a good wipe down with Lemon Oil and hopefully that's all she'll need.

Here she is.....

Anybody knows what the proof markings are for?

The MAS 49/56 sure is an interesting looking firearm! The guys here on the board that own them, love them.

Did you get any ammo for it yet?

I got some middle eastern surplus and was going to order some new production stuff from SOG. I know WGA also has some, but not ready to drop $100.00 yet.

I think she's UGLY, but still sexy in some strange way.

PXX in a rectangle indicates a rearsenal and the year. Your rifle was rearsenaled in 1970, 1974 and 1986.

They are not proof marks......They are the ID numbers of the soldiers who dropped them:p

....or perhaps number of times dropped between each rearsenal job ;)

Or how many times they have been captured and then given back!

It looks like you're missing the grenade sight and the slider thingie (For the grenade launcher) between the front sight and the muzzle. Hmmm. I would hope that it didn't come from SOG like that. Oh well. I'm sure it's still one hell of a good shootin rifle. Mine is. I love it.

The grenade launcher and grenade sight has been removed. That's why it may look weird.

I'll shoot some more pics of the front later and post it.

Thanks for all the compliments on the gun.

A neutered 49/56? Is that a California rifle?

The photo of the left reciever looks like it has three holes drilled in it. My MAS49/56 has nothing like that. Does anyone else have them?

I think he was trying to cover up the SER#

Yes, I am covering up the last 3 digits of the serial number.

This rifle came like this from the last owner, who is in the midwest, but it does qualify as a Caliban rifle now. He liked the way it looked without the launcher. I got a good price, so I can't complain.

Since the launcher is removed I'm curious if the gas system is OK? Guess it should be fine as it's normally open until the launcher is used. Let us know how it shoots.

Why do some people block out the last three or so digits on their serial numbered pics? I also see people over on the 1903 CMP board who list only part of the serial number by using X's in the last four digits. why is this?

But then I'd have to kill ya. :D

Seriously it's a preception of privacy thing. I don't think anyone can do anything with the # anyway but better safe than sorry. Kind of like not posting pictrues of your firearms and ammo. I'd dosen't take much of a slueth to figure out what folks have based on the wording of their posts. Some folks take it more seriously than others but in reality it ain't nothin but a thing.
