If you already have a pistol grip, and you change to another pistol grip, is that illegal?

If it had a pistol grip before 1989 or a USA parts kit. Changing pistol grips is legal.

The idea is that you are repairing your firearm.

Popshot, that should be completely legal, the same category as replacing your original thumbhole stock with a Choate "Dragunov" thumbhole stock. Hope this helps!...

That's what I thought, but this guy who was considering buying my 90 that had a Romainan stock on it, talked to one of his friends who was a ATF person http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/frown.gif and was told it was illegal. I had reduced some of the thickness with a beltsander to fit my hand better and that is what made it illegal I was told. I don't think I'll be talking to that guy again.

I have one of those RomAKs, and I can totally understand why you'd want to change out thumbhole stocks; you have to have fingers like ET to find a RomAK's handgrip comfortable. PLus, the stock is short as hell so your elbow has to fold very tightly and uncomfortably when you sight the target. It's a really awful stock.

I'm no lawyer, but the spirit of the regulation seems to be the elimination of those nasty, evil pistol grips.

If you switch thumbhole stocks, you don't have a pistol grip, which is one of the defining features of the assault rifle, along with threaded barrel, flash hider, bayonet lug, high capacity magazine, and grenade launcher. A rifle with two or more of said characteristics is defined as an assault rifle.

So I say switch out stocks.
