My maadi was imported by a company out of IL, and there is a number under the rear sight, it's worn, but it looks like "96".

Serial # will be longer than two digits. Even if it is # oooooo96. Look further back on the gun, near the magazine well. Somewhere above that on the receiver should be the right number. Serial numbers are always on the *receiver* somewhere.

what number do I look for to see if it is pre or post?

Look on the left side of the receiver at the upper front, where the receiver meets the cover. Mine has a relieved area on the cover so that the number is visible with the cover on, but if yours doesn't, then you may have to remove the cover.
However, '96 is probably the year of manufacture since mine was made in '94 and has '94 stamped on it.

With all the info I've read over the last few months, I too am a little confused. How can I varify the status of my Maadi? Mine has none of the "date" markings spoken of - on the barrel or the reciever. It does have the serial number (CAI 005xx) where you were talking about though.

Any thoughts?

This may not apply to a Maadi, but my MAK-90 and NHM-90 have 5-digit SNs. They were bought in '93. My second MAK-90 was bought after the Chinese weapon ban, and the SN is 94-XXXXX. I assume the first 2 are post-ban but pre-crime law.

As several people have mentioned in this section, ATF agents even get it wrong. This scares me: if I have a rifle that has been modified to slip through the loopholes, what will happen if some ATF type says it's illegal? I suspect I'll be lucky to get away with just having it confiscated. It's getting to where we're going to have to do like the guys with the FA toys: carry full documentation of legal status with the weapons.
