Alright Guy's, Yet another question.
Tapco has a barrel threading kit for $45.00
Is it legal for me to put threads on my post ban Mak-90, since it did not come with the threads when it was imported? Has anybody ever done this? Is there enough metal left on the barrel since maybe it had thread and they were mill off?
Thanks once again......................
RWS
Your MAK-90 was threaded 14x1mm LH. Before it was imported the threads were cut off. The barrel should measure 13mm=.512" Therefore the 14x1mm threading kit would be to large. It is illegal to thread the barrel.
Legally a muzzlebreak with set screws or one welded on is ok.

Hmmm... the MAK90 I just picked up *does* have a threaded muzzle (it also has the original preban import markings that have been lined out and replaced with the MAK90 markings). Does this mean I must permanently attach a muzzle brake or have the threads removed???

Tomac,
I got one of those rifles too. It is legal to put a threaded muzzle brake on as long as it is tack welded. The illegal part is when you can remove it by just unscrewing it.
RWS,
1/2"x28tpi die should fit a MAK-90 barrel and Tapco sell AK-74 style MB's that are threaded for 1/2x28. This is the standard size threads for the AR-15's.

Sounds like you got lucky, your rifle must have been coming in during the startup of the ban. When all the rifles had the so called bad features. Does your rifle have the bayonet lug? I WOULD NOT BE IN ANY HURRY TO REMOVE THE THREADS!!!! If your rifle was imported with threads it should, repeat should be legal. I was afraid that there would not be enough metal left on my barrel to put the threads back on, since they were there to start with and have now been removed. Tomac since you have threads on your muzzel, do you have bayonet lug, pistol grip, cleaning rod? Do you know for sure if its per ban or post ban? I would get a better answer as far as is it legal to have threads on a post ban rifle if it came into the country that way. If it is legal I would screw on a muzzel brake a tack weld it to front site post.
Any other thoughts
Oh and Thanks for the info JA

Tack weld it if it does not have threads. You'll be avoiding some problems and besides the more AK's we have in our hands, the more soldiers we have for our cause. Oh yah I'm drunk right now so take what you want.

My threaded MAK-90 came with thumbhole stock, cleaning rod under the barrel, but no bayonet lug. I'm going to try a couple of different muzzle brakes before permanently attaching one. Any suggestions for a superior threaded muzzle brake? Thanks!...

PS- Can't believe I picked this up NIB for $400 (but then, this is a small town...)

Check out these sites for muzzel brakes. http://www.tapco.com/ http://www.sksman.com/products.html http://www.globaltrades.com/j47muzl.html http://www.ak-47.net/links/
The first three goto muzzel brakes, ak-47.net is a link to alot of manufactures. Keep in mind that a flash hider/suppressor is ILLEGAL
A muzzel brake is legal. good luck in your hunt.

thanks i'll look into getting the 1/2x28 tpi
die. Although I am still not clear if it is legal for me to put threads on my mac-90 and then weld on a muzzel brake?????????????
RWS
It's not BUT, after it is tack welded how can you tell it is threaded? The muzzle brake will butt up aganist the front sight covering the threads.

Can a pre-ban have a flash suppresser leagly?

Yes if you have a pre-89 rifle, but if you don't get a muzzle compensater. They put you back on target quicker than a flash suppressor, the way I look at is if your worried someone will see you shooting then they should already be dead anyway.

To work, a muzzle brake must have a larger diameter area within the brake. It should be at least as large inside as the outside diameter of the barrel. Mine was cast, then threaded, so there is a chamber. Without this larger chamber, the gas doesn't exit correctly. I have never had this explained, but I have been told that the same is true with a ported barrel: there must be a larger than bore diameter chamber where the ports come in, if you want it to work.

Does any one know if the barrel diameter is enough to thread with the 14:1 LH on the SA-93s or would it need to be the 1/2:28. Could this be done with out removing the front sight post?
