I once handled a Romanian AKM that was used for familiarization training by an Army Reserve SF unit. I liked how it had a forward hand grip on it that characterized it as a Romanian AK. My question is, would it be legal to put one of those grips on the gun and it still be legal?
Thanks.

Global Trades said in one of their ads in the Shotgun News that those forward grips were not "real" pistole grips. I believe it too since we have such bass-akwards gun laws. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif

The law sez "(ii) pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon:". So I assume that unless It has a US parts kit it would be illegal.

I'm pretty sure there's a reasonable statement in MeNoVC's post, but it may take me a while to figure out what that may be...

Just a thought here, but I asked the same question about having a foregrip on a post ban Bushmaster on the ar15.com forum. The response was that it should be ok because the foregrip is NOT conspicuously below the action of the weapon (the action meaning the trigger assembly and bolt?), and that the foregrip ban mainly applied to submachine guns and pistols.

After thinking about it for a bit, that makes sense also because I can cite another weapon that would not be for sale unchanged if this was the case. The Tommy Gun. You can get a classic post ban semi auto Tommy Gun with a foregrip and it also has the same number of evil features like the ar-15 or ak-47 (pistol grip and removable hi cap mag on a post ban).

Of course to be perfectly safe I'd suggest writing a letter to the BATF and double checking...
