1. First one completed. Missing fireing pin which I replaced. Very crisp cartouches and initials carved in stock. It is a Terni 917 ROMA.

I shot a friends Caracano today for the first time. I think its the M38 that has the fixed rear sight. Anyway, after shooting it, I am under whelmed and will not be adding one of these to my collection.

You bet your Dupah it was shooting high, like about 24 inches high! It must be a 300 meter zero with a fixed rear sight. What were the Italians thinking when they came up with this plan!

Shooting the rifles out of the hands of Frenchmen. ;)

The adjustable tangent rear sights on the pre Model 38 Carcanos all had 300 yard fixed sights, which were the lowest setting. This was their WWI rifles which were used in long range trench warfare type environments.

The Model 1938 series used a constant fixed rear sight zeroed at 200 meters. Their theory on this was that if you aimed at the torso of an enemy anywhere between zero and 300 meters, you would score a hit.

Since these are combat instead of target rifles, this presents a problem at a 100 yard range, and you need to compensate ala "Kentucky Windage" when you shoot them at the range. My Carcanos vary as to how high they shoot, because if the front sight is worn, it increases it. But normally, I aim at the very bottom of the target frame to get my shots in the center of the paper. Once used to it, I have even shot 3" groups with Norma 156 grain ammo. I have also hit bottles at 100 yards after I get used to the compensation. In a way, it's like those old fixed sight Brown Bess's and Springfield Muskets.
