JA scanned the pages from his Clayco AKS manual and sent them to me via Email. I cleaned them up and have posted them on my web site for your viewing pleasure at:
http://webarmory.ixworld.com/manuals/clayco_aks/clayco.html
I have also scanned the owners manual from my Norinco Bullpup AK, and put it online at:
http://webarmory.ixworld.com/manuals/norinco_bullpup/type86s.html
Stay Tuned for more manuals to be put online in the coming days and weeks. JA is hard at work scanning more manuals and even as I type I can see the Received Data light on my modem glowing bright. Could it be the next installment?
Huummmmm, Could be! http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif
Enjoy,
Chuck

Thanks Chucko for some great info. That is the best manual I've ever seen for any gun. Thanks to JA also.

chucko, if you want the cheesy little MAK90 instruction manual (for the sake of thoroughness, if nothing else) I will scan it and send it to you.

Hey, not a bad idea. A web site of nothing but owner's manuals. I've got a post ban Poly Tech and Romanian Dragunov manual if you are interested.

Ok before we get too deep into this, lets figure of how to do it right.
When I first had the idea to do this ,I figured I'd only be putting up a few manuals. Now it's starting to grow, so do it right the first time.
Option #1
Manuals presented in the format I currently have them in.
Pros: Lets you browse them online
Cons: Takes up more of server space and band width. I would limit this to 10 or so manuals.
Option #2
Manuals offered in ZIP format for download.
Pros: Allows more manuals to be offered, Easier to download.
Cons: No online browsing
Other options?
Let me know.

CHUCKO, your efforts are appreciated. If everyone here just posted what they can help with, we would all be set. Zip is a good idea for manuals as most will expand and print. Thanks again, TURBO

The manuals that are up so far are great. Thanks.
About the download format. I don't know what type of files you were going to ZIP, but I think you should just do straight PDF. If you compress the files in a ZIP format, it would make it hard for Mac users (myself and many others on this board, including your future General Discussion moderator) to read it without special ZIP decompressing software. The standard Mac compression format is SIT--ZIP is pretty much DOS/Windows-only. If you provided the manuals in the Adobe PDF format, then anybody with the free Acrobat Reader could view them. Reader is available for almost every OS so you would have maximum compatibility.
These are just my thoughts. I'm running about four different platforms, so I'll be happy with whatever you choose. Thanks again.

I looked into the PDF creation software (Acrobat) and it cost about $200. I like you all but not that much. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/wink.gif Does anyone know of a freeware software package that will let me do the same thing?
OR
Does anyone know of a Windows program that will let me create SIT files so I can offer the manuals in both ZIP & SIT formats? Maybe some of you MAC people could look around for one. I'm sure your a lot more familar with the MAC software sites and programs than I am.
Thanks for the ideas so far! Now if we can only get some of the other people on the board to speak up, we can get the show on the road quicker.

You have to like us--ours are faster than yours. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif
Anyway, what type of files are you going to ZIP? If you're going to do JPEGs, then just provide a way to download them uncompressed. Anybody with a graphics program could read them then.
I'll look into SIT compressors for Windows, I know there are several. I also may have a copy Acrobat on an old PC I have laying around here. I haven't used it in a few years, so I'm a little rusty with the program. Would you like me to create the PDFs if I find it?

Some will be JPGs some will be GIFs. A lot of the manuals are B&W and end up being bigger as a JPG than as a GIF becuase JPG forces them to 16M Colors even though they are grey scale. I want to offer them in a compressed form of some type (ZIP,SIT,ARJ,PDF) to speed up downloads and minimize band width usage.
Oh, and I've used Macs before. They are not faster as a rule. There are some fast ones. But I wouldn't say they are faster, as a rule.

GIFs are good. Almost any graphics program will read them. I'll look into SIT compressors for Windows, but my glasses broke in the Christmas partying. I'm so nearsighted, I can barely see the front sight post. I should have an answer in a day or two.
All Macs are not faster than all PCs. Any Mac that uses PowerMac architecture is, however. A 601, 604, G3 or G4 Mac is faster than PCs that run at a much higher MHz. 603 based Macs aren't as fast, but they held in the Mac world the position that Celeron PCs hold today. I really don't want to get into a Mac vs PC fight. The AR-15/AK-47 battle looks tiny by comparison. I've seen threads that are hundreds of posts long on the subject.
Keep up the good work with the manuals!

I'm not looking for a fight. I just thought it would be funny to stir up the bees nest. I haven't had a good Operating System/Architecture war since I left OS/2 about 3 years ago. I now run Windoze NT, which I don't really care for, but it was the closest I could get to OS/2 and still run all the APPS I needed to run.
On a similar note, My system is now back at FULL strength. I formated and started from scratch last night. Its been about a year since I last reloaded, and my dual processor system was acting more like a 486. Now its a lean, mean, Y2K compliant, computing machine. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif

PS: JA before you die of a heart attack, No I didn't lose all the scans you sent me. Tape is a wonderful thing.
Thanks for the PS I was about to stroke out on the second paragraph of your post.
Recon, No sweat I have 2 differnt versions of the NHM-90 manual and 2 versions of the NHM-91 manual.

Hello, Its Me "Chucko"
This is the I.D. and Email I will use for all AK Manual submissions.
This is the Email Address you will send any manuals to. webarmory@epostoffice.com
Please address ANY questions, comments, ideas. or complaints to this Email Address.
I prefer them scanned at 200-300dpi and 256 colors or higher. Even if the manual was in Black and White. Please do not try to touch up the scans. Unless your REAL good at it. Its easier for me to edit them here if they have been unaltered. Prefered file format is JPG, GIF, or BMP if thats all you can do.
I will package them in .ZIP format for downlaoding. If one of the MAC users would be so kind as to repackage each manual in SIT format, or find me a Windows based SIT archiver, I will make the manuals available for download in that format also.
