Has anyone any input on cleaning with the SAR 2 issued kit?Am always leary using the issue steel rods because they are invariably bent and require the crown cap for alignment.Plus, the SAR 2 cap appears too large a diameter to effectively grip the crown correctly and align the rod.Would not care ,but cannot find American rod adapters for the beautiful EG AK-74 mag set cleaning kit tips.Any info appreciated.Thanx!Gearhead.

What size adapter do you need? fill in the blanks _x_mm to screw the rod in to _"x_tpi to screw the brush into.

Dear JA-Thanx for the response.I had to go to the local bolt shop and a machinist to figure THIS one out! This adapter must be male to male, since it would be adapting female EG tips to an OUTER'S female aluminum cleaning rod.The Outer's male part of the adapter is an unusual English size. The length should be around 8mm.But since this is a common attachment dimension , I am not too worried. The other male side of the adapter is metric, and measures 3.5 mm diameter by 0.6 mm pitch by roughly 15 mm length.Since this is an unusual male to male, dissimiliar diameter/pitch to diameter/pitch,I know it won't be cheap to make. The machinist recommended welding an AK-74 rod tip to an Outer's adapter, but where will I find an extra cleaning rod?Thanx for ANY input! http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif-Gearhead.

Dear JA-Just called K-VAR and Global-They have the Bulgarian 74 cleaning rods-K-VAR tells me that the Bulgarian ones are nicer quality.Still don't like the idea of welding the tip to an adapter-think I'll just have a spare to CAREFULLY clean the barrel with.Have never cleaned from the crown end,but Jimmy says if you're careful and don't scrape sides, you minimize crown damage.Thanx again for any input! http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif-Gearhead.

Screw cleaning rods!!! I bought a bunch of those cleaning ropes with the copper bristles sewn right in the end. It's like pulling a thousand patches through your gun without the rod or the damage that it can cause. When the rope is dirty, just drop it in the washing machine and voila, it's as good as new. Sure it's not original issue, but who cares when it comes to cleaning your gun. For the 74, all you need is the .22 caliber model rope; for the 47 you need the 30.06. If you need a link to someone who sells these, let me know

Dear Albert-Thanx for the input!I have been using an Outer's rig with a .22 tip. Those ropes are nice, but do they get pretty dirty with Russian Ammo?I'm so paranoid,I use a 50/50 water/ammonia solution before going at it with the Varsol-and have to change it twice with Wolf brand ammo.Anybody have any input on dangers of military issue rods?(esp. w/o the proper crown cap?).Appreciate all responses! http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif-Gearhead.

My lathe is idleing with a 1/4" steel rod turned down to .185". A 3.5x.60mm die is on order what size is the outers rod threads?

Dear JA-I REALLY appreciate the help, but please don't go to any expense on this. The machinist said that my Outer's male thread is around 9/64 diameter and 32 tpi while the bolt store guy said it is 4mm diameter and 0.7 mm pitch. The overall length is around 8mm.Since the Outer's cleaning rods all are pretty standardized,I figured that a person could use the cleaning patch attachment from an Outer's kit to determine the dimensions. The 3.5mm x 0.6 mm male would be around 15 mm long and the other Outer's pattern male would be around 8 mm long.If you want to give it a shot, great, but I don't want you to spend too much time or effort, especially since I cannot get an accurate Outer's dimension. If you want to,please e-mail me a price,'cuz I'll buy a few if they fly.I really think that you need a universal Outer's kit, tho', to determine th male thread pattern and diameter. It's up to you.Thanx for listening-Gearhead http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif
