I recently purchased a Saiga 308 carbine with 16.5" barrel. The carbine is same as the early imported and current 22" model but sports a polymer stock and handguard like the 7.62x39 Saiga. The EAA model has a better fit and finish than I had seen on the first imports. The finish is a spray on, but looks even. The carbine sports the standard appointments: side scope mount rail, spring-loaded firing pin, with the altered trigger group. The trigger has a lot of initial take up but is smooth and light. The safety is the same a standard AK. It is strange at first with a Monte carlo stock, but after awhile one gets use to it.
Taking the Saiga to the range, I was concern that the recoil would be excessive due the 16.5" barrel and 7.5lbs weight. Shooting from a bench, with Port surplus ammo, average group was 2.2" at 100yards with Iron sights. Hitting 200yard 24"x12" steel gong was very easy. Recoil was very manageable, much more than a Remington 7400 carbine or a Spanish FR8. Follow Up shots are fairly quick, with limited muzzle rise. After 250rds no malfunctions at all.
To compare this rifle with a standard Ak or Dragunov would not be fair, the rifle is more like an M1 Garand tanker or Remington 7400 carbine. To me the Saiga has better handling than a M1 tanker, due to it's narrower profile and changing magazines is much faster than using an 8rd enblock garand clip Another advantage of the Saiga over a tanker or 7400 is the sidescope rail, making it much easier to scope than the others.
Some improvement to the Siaga would be a shorter stock with a recoil pad, and larger sling swivels. Purchase price was $300, with cleaning rod, cleaning kit , a 1 8rd mag. I have not decided if I should have it converted to use 20rd M14 magazine, but I think I will leave it in with the current stock. I'll have to recheck the accuracy once my PSO 6 scope comes in. If you are looking for a good hunting carbine, or an alternative to an M1 Garand tanker, get the Saiga.

Nice range report, thx! I've been trying to *avoid* thinking about the 16" Saiga .308 (wouldn't that make a nice complement to the standard 22" Saiga .308?) but now you've just made that *much* harder!... ;)

PS- I look forward to hearing how it does at longer range w/the 6x scope.

Who sells 'em? That 7.5lb weight sounds pretty good, after carrying a 9lb. CETME around. You said you were getting 2" groups with the irong sights? That sounds pretty good, too.

I bought mine from a dealer I know. It is lighter than my Cetme. The Cetme trigger is a heavier and creepier than the Saiga. Went shooting today, still only Iron sights here a target 5 shot group 100yards. The more I shoot this rifle., the more I like it.

I think they are a better deal than the CETME. The only advantage the CETME has is the capacity. But on .308's, I have never really thought the large capacity is a great advantage. For rapid fire, the smaller calibers have the advantage. I think the Saiga is made better.

I agree. The Saiga has all new & original parts (no used or US parts) and if you really need hicap mags then Krebs can modify the Saiga to take M-14 mags.

I believe CDNN Investment and two versions. One was the EAA and the other had a Hesse receiver with a pistol grip. But, read some bad reviews for the Hesse receiver. I believe Consumer Direct also carries the EAA saiga .308.

The Saigas carried by Consumer Direct don't have the EAA import markings. If memory serves their Saigas have something like "R&K International" marked as the importer.

I dod not know about the Hesse version, I have heard bad thing about the company. The monte Carlo stock is not evil looking, but feels good.

Just heard back from Krebs. They will *not* convert Saiga .308s to accept M-14 mags.

I spoke with marc krebs to convert my saiga 308 to galil mags. He said it is difficult and will not convert any more guns. Maybe someone can contact Stan Andrewski to convert the mags. He is an expert at converting mags to fit different rifles. Galil mags may be easily converted.
