Recently purchased a used preban Norinco AK in .223. First time at the range and it has frequent 2 rounds fired with one trigger pull. I've checked the trigger group, disconnector, bolt and carrier, gas tube, etc. Everything looks OK and operates fine with manual cycling and dry firing. The firing pin is not jammed or pinned incorrectly. I'm wondering if the firing pin spring is too weak and the forward inertia when the bolt closes is causing a slam fire. The second round does not eject completely when this occurs. The weapon will cylce fine for several rounds then "BAM-BAM"! I'm usually pretty good with repairs, but this one has me stumped! NEVER had this problem on the 762s. Any ideas? Thanks!

What brand ammo are you using? I had problems with slam fires in SKS with Remington primers in reloads. But the firing pin has no spring. Firing pin spring or sear/hammer engagement or sear spring. I would check these three things.
It is used so previous owner may have worked on/messed with sear/hammer.

Thanks for the reply. I was using reloads, but never had this problem when I use them in my Ruger AC556 or Colt AR-15s. The sear and hammer look box-stock and seem to work perfectly. I will recheck sear spring and try "stretching" the firing pin spring to increase tension. But first, I'll try some factory new .223 and see what happens. Thanks again!

After stretching the firing pin spring I went back to the range and had no more slam fires with factory rounds or reloads. Guess the spring had gotten too compressed. Thanks for the help!

You should replace the spring ( stretching doesn´t least for a very long time, you will have the same problem again )

Every preban Norinco .223 I have had my hands on has a firing pin spring which is too weak, causing double firing. I always replace the firing spring with a stronger one- don't stretch the original one, it's just not the right spring. Better to be safe.

Thanks to everyone for replying about the slam fire on my 223. I have ordered a complete spring kit for the rifle. The spring on the firing pin looked like the ones in a cheap ballpoint pen! Anyway, problem solved.
I'm glad to have the little .223. I've got 3 calibers in preban...can't believe what the stuff is selling for now. Who would have ever thought a stamped receiver Chinese throw-away AK underfolder would sell for a thousand + bucks!!

I've got a pre ban Norinco .223 aks and I don't think it has a firing pin spring at least It does not look like my polytech 7.62 that has a fireing pin spring. Is this rare.

Ah, Ruger AC556, so nice!

Does it have an 13 inch barrel?

Take care, OUT in Vegas!

My 223 mak 90 doubles sometimes... but ONLY when I use a 5 round magazine. I've heard MANY ak owners say oh that's just to "be expected" from ak's ie sometimes they slam fire/double. I've heard not cleaning the internals will allow this to happen on ANY ak. Is that just BS?

Is it possible that the 5 rd magazine is affecting the bolt somehow and causing the doubling? Or should I take apart the bolt and replace the firing pin spring?

The rifle doesn't do it consistantly so i'm not overly concerned. But when is goes bangbang it can piss off the range officer. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/wink.gif

The "problem" with AKs slam firing is due more to the soft primer than the rifle. Military ammo uses a hard primer. In the Norinco .223 they included a firing pin spring which is not standard with the 7.62x39 rifles to try and keep this problem to a minimum. I reload for both of these calibers when the Russian stuff isn't so cheap and I have gone to using the special CCI "military" primers. Stops slam fires in their tracks.

My BWK-92 Norinco .223 has never slammed fired and yes it does have the firing pin spring, unlike my 7.62x39 Norincos.
