Got the AK bug really bad folks, so bought another one. A Russian Siaga this time, and have found it to be exceedingly accurate. The rub is the magazines. I can live with the 5 rd mag, since this is mainly going to be a target and varmit rifle, but AKUSA wants 49$ apiece for them! When questioned about this, the guy said "we're the only game in town." Really rude SOB. My regular AK mags (Hungarian and e. German) do fit the weapon, but feeding is only about 75%. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

If memory serves then the trunion on the Saiga doesn't have the feed ramp found on the standard AK trunion. Thus standard AK mags will fit but not feed reliably. I don't know if it would be legal to modify the Saiga to function with hicap mags.

However given the complaint of expensive mags? I dont think it would be illegal to modify the cheap chinese 5rd AK mags for the saiga? Even the 10rd mags which I have seen advertised would be legal to my understanding.

I have a Saiga 7.62 & i'll have you know that their are 30rd mags for the Saiga floating around still. They are not "modified", they were actually made custom for the rifle a couple years back. Ask around on the rifle boards.
The Saiga has a AK-74 trunion(part that the barrel is pressed into) not the AK-47/AKM type. The Saiga mag is like the AK-74 mag. The front of the mag is not cut out like the AK-47. This lets the ammo feed straight into the chamber so no need for a ramp. Look at a Saiga and AK-47 mag side by side and you will see the AK-47 has a dip in the front. You will have to build up(weld)the front of a AK-47 mag to match the height of the Saiga mag. Then it will feed fine.
Unless they were made before 1994 they are modified pre ban mags. This is the year that the mfg and import of mags of post 1994 mfg that hold over 10 rds was made illegal.

Thanks for the help guys, but I think I've managed to fix the problem. I took a small piece of heat resistant plastic and made a small feed ramp in front of the magazine well. made it just wide enough to press fit into the receiver, and long enough to back up under the barrel. Took all of 20 minutes with a jeweler's file, and so far works great with 5 rd AK mags (2$ each at the San Antonio gun show) Kalishnikov USA and their 49$ mags can kiss my butt! Have another question though. I'm thinking of turning this thing into a coyote rifle, and I'm wondering about night vision scopes. (That's legal down here. Gotta love Texas!) Anybody had any experience with these things? There will be no shots beyond 100 yds, and price is a very important consideration, as is the fact it must have nothing at all to do with Kalisnikov USA. Those people REALLY have my goat!
Enfieldj,
could you give a a little review of your saiga, groups, finish, weight compared to SKS.
thinking of getting one.
glad you liked yours and got it to work
