What type of oil would be best for long-term storage/caching? I'm mainly concerned about damaging the wood on my ak's. Any tips on caching or normal long-term storage would be helpful.

If your are talking about REALLY long term storage, you might as well run with the big dogs and try to find some cosmoline. I have purchased a few old military rilfles (including my first SKS) that were totally slimed with the stuff (even the bores) and while it takes a little elbow grease to get off, it does seem to work. Sorry, but I can't think of any suppliers off hand, but I am quite sure you can find some if you look around.
As far as the wood, any good paste wax should be fine, just lay on a coat or three and you should be fine. After you get the rifle greased & waxed up, you can seal it up in a plastic bag (get one that has a meltable seal, like the ones they use for food storage, just bigger). Tossing a small dessicant package into the bag wouldn't hurt either.
Good Luck!

A gun is useless if you can't get to it.

A cached gun may be useless to me now, but someone may find a use for it later.

Tapco, www.tapco.com (http://www.tapco.com) sells tiny bottles about the size of a gumball ea, filled w/ military cosmoline, they sell in bulk cheaply and other than axel grease your best bet.

I have a question - why cosmoline versus just oil? I ask because I've seen transmissions on 30 year old bulldozers opened up looking brand new, soaked in oil.
Can anything rust while submerged soaked in oil? Or do you want cosmoline as a "dryer" solution?
I'm assuming that, if you're caching, removal of all the "plastic" is a viable option.

The tiny vials of grease that Tapco sells is for lubrication, not storage. It is NOT cosmoline but a grease know as lubriplate. It is to grease the Op-Rod and Bolt on M-1 and M-14 Rifles. The small vial fits perfectly into the cleaning recess in the butstock. It is designed to be packed with the cleaning kit. It also works on the bolt and bolt carrier and hammer face of an AK.

Try the automotive parts stores for spray on
Cosmoline ,I use it on old bayonets & gun parts in storage. It's called: Auto Mates,
Cosmoline Corrosion Preventative.

This spray on cosmoline leaves a non-sticky
transparent amber film, Long term protection
for all bare metal and machined parts. The
hardware store might have it, I bought mine
at an Army surplus store. I would also like
to recommend the book by Ragner Benson:

Brownell's sells cosmoline in 1 lb. cans. They also sell treated paper (dessicant) to wrap your firearms as well as oxygen barrier bags of various sizes in which to seal firearms. Brownell's states that steel wraped in the above paper and sealed in the above bag should be rust proof for 10-15 years without using any heavy grease or oil.

Two more alternatives for storage:
For short term storage (in my gun rack) I use Sheath oil - it is a polarized oil.
For long term I use Outers Gun Grease.
Both are available at most gun/sporting goods stores.
Does anyone know where I can pick up M155 powder storage tubes? They are green hexagon (for stacking) double walled plastic tubes with one blind end and the other end with a screw on cap with an o-ring if I remember right.
These are about the right size for an AK, have only one opening to seal, double walled (inside is a separate tube) so probably would be more puncture resistant, and have no metal parts. I have three now, but want to find more.

Regarding caching vs. keeping firearms handy vs. joining a gun lobby.
Why not do all three - they are not mutually exclusive. I contribute to the NRA, SAF, and GOA.

I've belonged to the NRA for years as an annual member, but recently became a lifer.
I also belong to GOA. Short of a revolution,
they're our best bet.
